What to see In Whitby?

Going tomorrow for two nights. (Was supposed to be staying with sister in lakes) so this is a compromise. What do I need to see? Staying near the abbey.

We were there a few years ago (and before COVID of course) so you'd need to check these are still open, but enjoyed the Abbey, pottering round the independent shops (especially the bookshop, which is fab), walking along the beach, the Dracula walk and the Rusty Shears cafe (which had an amazing range of gins as well as very good food). Robin Hood's Bay is also nice if you want a day trip to somewhere nearby.

Whitby is lovely. Much more quaint than I was expecting. Found a lovely cafe and had scampi and chips from the Magpie. (Not quite sure what all the fuss is about.)

We did the Dracula treasure trail when we were there this summer

EggbertHeartsTina · 14/10/2020 19:50

There is a Dracula 'experience' which is like a haunted house type thing. Indoors so not sure if it's open. Anyway it's so bad it's good, if you see what I mean!

My mum is from Whitby so I've spent a lot of time there. Old side (i.e. the Abbey side) is the best. Indie shops, selling all sorts of cool stuff, Lucky Duck shop, Whitby Jet jewellery. 199 steps up to the Church and Abbey if you can manage them. The church next to the Abbey and the Abbey itself.

Just noticed you've already been there one day! If you fancy more fish and chips, Trenches is good, or it was, I haven't been for years. Personally I always prefer a cone of chips with a wooden fork Grin

Also think the Magpie is over-rated - but there are some great, old-fashioned tearooms. I rather liked the little museum, too - seem to recall some weird, withered hand that featured in Harry Potter. I'd be very happy pottering around Whitby for a day or two. Watch out for vicious seagulls!

Batinahat · 14/10/2020 21:31

Do a ghost walk / Dracula walk, walk on the beach, visit Robin Hood's Bay (short car journey - 15 mins), walk the 199 steps down from the abbey to the old town and soak up the atmosphere, eat fish and chips, go to Beckett's cafe for the most incredible soup and cakes in Whitby :)

Mactaylorssecretwife · 14/10/2020 21:33

We live close by, the Magpie is definitely over rated and there are much better fish and chip shops.

Theres a hop on and off open top bus tour with a really interesting recorded commentary. It goes from west cliff in a loop, taking in Pannett park, up to the Abbey and down by the train station/co-op, amongst other bits. It's 7.50 for an adult day ticket and I'd recommend it.

You can do a 20 minute boat trip just out of the harbour for £4. I saw dolphins on the pirate one , and the Bark Endeavour we took a slightly different route and had a great view of the 'crocodile' shape in the cliffs from west cliff to the harbour Smile

The Museum in Pannett Park is great - don't miss their crocodile (or the Hand of Glory!).

Thanks all. I've trekked over to Cragside. It took almost three hours. Wanted to got there for ages. Not sure that I shouldn't have explored Whitby a bit more.

If you like steam trains, grosmont is lovely and very close by

Dowser · 15/10/2020 12:53

20 mins apparently
Lovely old fashioned, 50s railway station that has appeared in many films

Batinahat · 16/10/2020 13:18

@Toddlerteaplease am hoping you will come back and tell us all about your trip to Whitby and what you did so we can all live vicariously :)

Toddlerteaplease · 16/10/2020 14:10

I just pottered around the shops! Walked along the battery Peru and had pan cakes with bacon and maple syrup in Sherlock's in Flowergate

Now in York. But wishing I'd stayed longer in Whitby and explored the local area a bit more.

Go again! I like the old museum too. Museums like they used to be!

This! All being well, I'm going back next month because of everything I didn't fit in.
Toddlerteaplease · 16/10/2020 16:00

I will definitely go again. It's such a lovely place! The only good thing about Covid is that I am going to new places, that I wouldn't have gone to otherwise. Should have Been in Lourdes in July, but went to Cornwall. Should have been in the Lake District at the minute. But Whitby was lovely!

We did a lovely walk from Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay and had chips when we arrived. It was a glorious day and we had a picnic in the way. We got a bus back from RHB to Whitby.

The James Cook museum was good. As was the history tour of the Abbey - headphones though, so not sure if they are still doing it.

The White Horse and Griffin does lovely food.

Whitby was a lovely place to wander around too. I’d like to go back and visit again.
