The children's nasal flu spray?

Both of my children are fully vaccinated - and the letters recently came through for my eldest to have hers at school and youngest at my gp's surgery. I can't help but worry though, almost everyone I speak to about it looks at me as if I'm some sort of monster when I mention booking them in for it, and that it's a vaccine their children will never be receiving.
I'm too afraid to google, I'm paranoid at the best of times, what is all this about please?! Confused

What? I've just booked my children in. What's the problem with it?

Qwom · 13/10/2020 15:46

I don't see what the issue is?
DS is 11 and has had it each year since reception class 🤷🏻‍♀️ he's fine, excelling at school and a generally lovely boy

I think it is fine. Flu can be really serious. My dc have it every year.

I think people worry about the fact that the nasal spray immunisation contains live flu (unlike the flu jab) but it is attenuated (i.e. weakened) so it won't give kids flu.

As far as the research goes, I accept that the flu vaccine for children has not resulted in a significant change to hospitalizations or deaths due to flu in children, but im not only worried about my kids dying, I want to avoid them having an unpleasant illness.

My opinion is that it is a very good thing. My DC are both in primary school and have been having it since they were pre-school with no issues. I don't know why people are looking at you like that because you are thinking of allowing your DC to have it. I have no idea what the take up of it is at my DC's school but I have never spoken to anyone who thinks it is a terrible thing (except people who are anti-vax in general but I know very few of them)

You are right and they are wrong op. Don’t give it a second thought.
I feel sorry for the kids actually that their parents are naive enough to not provide them with a (free) vaccination that may potentially stop them getting a nasty illness. Not to mention protecting other vulnerable family members.

Noitjustwontdo · 13/10/2020 17:29

Children are super spreaders of the flu so it’s about protecting others as much as it protects them. It’s more important this year than ever.

Thank you everyone - I didn't think it could be anything disastrous, probably just unlucky I copped a load of anti vaxxers! I always say why would the already strapped NHS keep providing them for free if they wasn't needed!
