Anyone else nervy when strangers come to collect sold items?

Selling a bit of furniture on FB and it's struck me that anyone could come to my home under the guise of buying the item.

I don't have anyone home with me except the dc. Am I just being overly anxious?

What do others do!?

Yes. I usually ask my step dad to come round (lives in the next street? if he's not busy. Recently he couldn't come round and the guy that was buying messaged me and said his friend was on the way round in his van to pick it up. I was a bit wary so asked my next door neighbour to keep an eye on me from her window Grin.

Yes, I'm on my own with DC as well. I normally just let my folks or friends know that X is coming to pick up an item at X Oclock.

I had an absolute lump of a guy with scary tattoos came to pick up a unit- and I was quite nervous but he was really the loveliest, friendliest one out of all the things I've ever sold. Don't let fear run away with you

Yes! Mainly because of Luther .

I always get my other half to be here when they pick up

MJMG2015 · 13/10/2020 14:23

No. Not at all. But I live in a fairly ok/nice area and I'm not as 'careful' as I probably should be in this regard. In other ways I'm very aware/concerned. I hate having to walk past the groups of teenage lads in the park - they make me very uncomfortable.

I have had quite a few tradesmen in the house and people to deliver/collect furniture etc and it's never bothered me.

We're all different 🤷🏻‍♀️

I changed my ebay name to not have a female name and use the name Alex when responding to messages.

With FB though, is your profile locked down? What are your publicly available profile photos?

Yeah my penchant for crime podcasts is screwing me over here!

Trades etc doesn't bother me - always feels safer when it's official.

FB and Insta are locked down to profile pic only, pretty dull pic of me and husband.

Same for me.
I know that at best they will want to haggle and from there it's a slippy slope to absolutely bonkers.
not worth it

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/10/2020 14:32

Oh god I hadn't even considered the haggling. My mind went straight to murder Grin

@LJC1234 I always think of Luther too 😂😳

Gosh, this has never even occurred to me. I've frequently disposed of stuff on eBay and Freegle.

The last bloke brought a friend to help lift... and kindly moved some other furniture for me while they were here.

I received new kitchen drawer runners in the post from a chap a few years ago, after the drawer played up while I was making him a cup of tea.

One woman took cuttings from my plants and planted them for me (with magical green fingers, as hers took when mine never had)...

I've had SUCH good value from random people picking stuff up over the years. :-)

There must be bad'uns out there, but I've been lucky enough not to meet them (yet... ).

Of course I'm not selling on Facebook or anywhere with a pic or social profile, although my accounts do use a female name.

So I'm not telling you nothing can ever happen; but through more than a decade I've been fine. And that's not in specially naice areas: my neighbours have frequently included drug addicts and squatters.
