Straw Poll: Have you turned the heating on yet?

Curious as to whether people have switched their heating back on yet? I'm funny about heating. I like a cold house. I like to see how long I can go without turning the heating back on after the summer. Still not done it but sitting here WFH and my hands are a bit numb. I really need to bite the bullet.
Interested in when people switched theirs on and where in the country you are (I'm in London).

Yes

Yes, but mainly for the guinea pigs

I don't usually use chat - I tend to lurk in AIBU and here was me just thinking how nice people are in Chat for not wishing me dead for asking a banal question. Until midsomermurdress and pleasantville came along. To whom I would answer politely (this being Chat rather than AIBU): you're right, it is a very dull topic. I made it obvious on my post header what the topic was. Luckily I've never bored any of my friends into a coma yet. There is still time however. :-)

Anyway I'm amused to see some of you are equally as strange as me, that the great Post Summer Switch On is also a Thing. I thought it was just me. I asked my husband earlier if he was cold and wanted the heating on but he said he was fine so I might persevere another few days. I've now got a woolly jumper and a fleece on.

I never have heating on at night no matter what the weather. I like it a bit cold.

What temperature do people set it for in the day?
Mine is set at 17 in the day and 21 in the evening, turning it down to 12 overnight.

I find these conversations interesting!

@midsomermurderess

Unless you can't afford it, why not just put it on when you need it? This obsession with 'have you put your heating on' is so dull. You are, everyone one of you, so dull you could easily bore everyone around you in to a coma.
Sorry this made me laugh. Yes our heating has been on for the past few weeks. It’s cold - we put it on if it’s cold. That’s it really.
BiBabbles · 13/10/2020 14:15

Ran it here yesterday for 3 hours just to check everything is okay, always worried there is going to be issue when it gets to be cold enough to really need it or we're suddenly going to be going through way more than before for that amount of time (had some issues with that in the past) so we like to do an early chilly check once people start bundling up here so we can take care of any issues.

Everything went fine so not likely to turn it on again for a while now. I'm quite happy to sit under a blanket during the cold parts of the day.

SweetPetrichor · 13/10/2020 14:51

Yep, but we only heat the living room cause that’s where we spend most time and we have tarantulas who can’t be allowed to get too cold. They don’t need heat mats, they just need the room to be comfortable. So that’s our excuse!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 13/10/2020 14:51

No, and won't be until I feel cold. I especially hate working when it's too warm.

Zeebeezee · 13/10/2020 14:56

I just use the one hour boost if feeling chilly. Well that's because I can't figure out the electronic timer LOL!

Anyways am lucky, the house is well insulated and heats up quickly and cools down slowly, so the hour boost when required is enough for now.

Must find someone who understands how to work the timer.

unicornparty · 13/10/2020 14:58

I've not had mine on yet. I'm in East Anglia.

BillywigSting · 13/10/2020 15:01

Yes. I will eat beans on toast all month to not have a cold house. It doesn't have to be boiling but I absolutely refuse to be freezing in my own home.

It's only been on for an hour or so at a time so far but I am in the north, backing on to a big open field and the house is old and poorly insulated.

LadyCatStark · 13/10/2020 15:30

Yes I’ve set the thermostats up (we moved into our house in May and it’s a new build) now. It come on if it dips below 20 in the morning and evening, 18 in the day time (DH and I are WFH but we’ve still been comfortable at 18) and 12 in the night time which I don’t think it will.

bloodywhitecat · 13/10/2020 16:03

Yes, we used to play the leave it off as long as possible game but this year we have two babies under one and DP has cancer so if he's cold the heating goes on and I melt into a menopausal heap. In fact the log burner is alight right now.

peachypetite · 13/10/2020 16:06

Wfh with numb hands? No thanks. If you feel cold, put it in. Doesn’t matter what others do!
