Anyone on HRT..?

I'm nearly 53.. had a hysterectomy at 36 but kept my ovaries and am finally in the throes of menopause.
I feel rubbish. Permanently exhausted and frequently tearful (which is not me at ALL) , the hot flushes drive me nuts and my sex drive has vanished.
I'm wondering whether it is worth asking to try hrt.. does it really make a difference? I have my dd2's wedding coming up this month, I'm going to be a grandma next spring, and I feel nothing but down, dull, foggy and fed up!

Yes it does!

I had TAH at 38, took ovaries too so needed HRT. Still get some mood swings and hot flushes etc but it does help. Took me a while to find one that works but glad I persevered.

I would say go for it. I've been on it a year now (patches) and will be on it for life if I can. I have found it nothing but hugely beneficial.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 13/10/2020 18:56

I've found it really helpful

Fabulous stuff

JamieLeeCurtains · 13/10/2020 19:08

Oh god yes, it's good shit 👍

Sidge · 13/10/2020 19:09

Yup. Life changing for so many women.

CaraDuneRedux · 13/10/2020 19:10

Bloody marvellous stuff. I'd have fallen apart completely and had a nervous breakdown without it, I reckon.

britnay · 13/10/2020 19:17

just make sure that you choose one that you are happy with how it is sourced..

ItWasNotMeITellYou · 13/10/2020 19:21

Amazing. Life changing. I’d had cancer so was wary about taking it but because of the cancer I saw specialists. I was feeling dreadful but I hadn’t realised quite how bad I’d been feeling for years and years to the dreadful.

I should be on a patch but sourcing them is unreliable so I’m on one pump of Ostregel daily ( most people take two) and estrogen tablets for 12 days of my cycle.
I’ve never got on with hormonal contraceptives so was skeptical but I’ve got my life back.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 13/10/2020 19:22

What is everyone on? I only started a few months ago so wondering if I am on right one/ dosage etc

Miggymoggymugwumps · 13/10/2020 19:29

Premarin is routinely prescribed for HRT but please research how it is sourced. Many women are unaware that it is made from mares urine and consequently those horses suffer horrendously.

JamieLeeCurtains · 13/10/2020 19:32

I'm on patches, and yes they can be hard to get hold of (and stick on!) a lot of the time, so I'm thinking of asking my omnipotent but sadly not omniscient GP to change to the gel.

I have no uterus, so just need oestrogen (estradiol).

Evorel 50 is good. Also Estraderm 50. I think that's the 'starter patch' dose, but you can go down to 25, and up to 75 and 100.

Read the NICE guidelines and don't get fobbed off.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/10/2020 19:34

HRT is a lifesaver. Why so many women needlessly suffer is beyond me.

JamieLeeCurtains · 13/10/2020 19:34

I'm pretty sure the estradiol in my patches is made from yams.

Sidge · 13/10/2020 19:58

@Miggymoggymugwumps Premarin is rarely prescribed nowadays. We tend to use non CEE products such as oestriol which is synthetic oestrogen. I can’t remember the last time I saw a woman on CEE.

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 13/10/2020 20:03

OP you sound exactly how I was 2 years ago. Def give it a go.

Get the right GP, be willing to try a couple of different types and dosages. And then get ready to remember who you used to be before the fog came down!

Most women I know get patches or gel made from synthesised yam.
LlamaofDrama · 13/10/2020 20:16

I'm on the gel, plus mirena coil. I'm 48, and at the beginning of last year I suddenly realised that I'd hit peri. Total exhaustion, low mood, I really struggled to deal with stuff, and shocking night sweats meant I couldn't sleep, so I was exhausted, so my mood was low and so on around in the circle.

I tried natural remedies for a year and they helped. I went on HRT and it helped so much more! Instead of around 18 nights per month of 3 hours sleep I'm probably on about 4, with a few of nearer 5. And everything is better.

Springcatkin · 13/10/2020 20:17

Yes. As others have said wish I'd done it a while ago.

maresedotes · 13/10/2020 21:49

I had been on Elleste Duet for around 3 years. It made such a difference to my life. It's out of stock now so I've switched to Femosten. I would recommend using HRT.
