I have a job interview this week and I'm feeling low in confidence and not very good at selling myself. All help and advice would be very welcome Smile

What is the job?

PurpleDaisies · 12/10/2020 13:03

What’s it for?

Go through the job spec and look at the skills they want and write down examples of times you’ve met those. Look at the STAR interview technique

Can you do a sort of mock interview with a family member or friend?
I do a lot of public speaking for work and often if there’s a big event coming up I’ll practise my speech with DP as the audience and he’ll point out things I need to improve like crossing my legs, waving my hands too much etc
In a kind way obviously!

Also to help with the confidence issue start by making a list of all the things you’ve done in previous roles that you’re proud of.
They don’t have to be massive achievements but will jog your memory with examples of things to talk about in the interview as well as hopefully giving you a bit of extra confidence in all the things you have to bring to the role

Thanks all I only have a small child and a cat to practise to which I don't think will be helpful

Job is very specific (don't read well-paid into this!) so can't really say

Currently checking out the job spec again. Thanks for that advice

Any advice for remembering stuff when I get in there? My mind just goes completely blank!

STAR advice above is key.
Situation
Task
Action
Result
Look at the job spec and Google competency questions.
Think of some generic questions based on the job spec they may ask you. Maybe 5-8 around key things like communication, interpersonal skills, development, leadership etc.
Then use the STAR technique to write down specific examples from your current or previous roles, or hobbies. Key thing is using specific examples.
You can then read your notes over again to get them in your head.
The goal isn’t to then recite them parrot fashion in the interview, because of course you can’t predict what Qs they are going to ask you. But to have done sufficient prep to have decent, solid, specific examples to hand you can use for any question they do ask. So you don’t freeze in the interview.
Also think of some questions to ask them. Write these in your notebook too. Absolutely fine to take your notebook in with you.
And remember, they’ve invited you in for an interview, so you’ve made it through the initial shortlisting process, so they like what they see!
Good luck.
