Kids birthday ideas during coronavirus

What are people doing for their kids' birthdays during the pandemic? We don't make a big song and dance but they usually get a treat of an outing of some kind with a schoolfriend or two. I guess we'll just be at home this year as our birthdays are all in the winter and I'll do their favourite food and some cake etc, but is there anything else I can do to make it more fun, or anything you can think of that they could do to celebrate with friends in a Covid-safe way?

We did a zoom party during the initial lockdown.

Everywherethatmarywent · 11/10/2020 21:00

Watching as we have a birthday next week!

Organised sports activity with friends - even if you can’t do food and cake after? Our five a side football place are still offering kids 5-a-side parties with a coach in line with grass roots football Covid guidance, though no food provided after.

Family film with homemade pizzas and treats followed by a sleepover in the living room everyone with mattress and duvets etc on the floor. We also had a lot of fun with him baking and decorating his own cake (he was turning 8)

OverTheRainbow88 · 11/10/2020 21:07

Depends on age I guess?

We booked a local soft play with a cafe last week, kids played, adults had a cuppa and cake.

DD (8) has had invites to four parties this month. Two sleepovers (one picnic in forest and then sleep in tent, one a film evening and sleeping inside) one craft party and one Lego party.

I'm not sure what I'll do. Both mine have winter birthdays and DH doesn't want me to let any other kids inside.

DD was 9 in the spring. She spent the morning playing with her new toys, had a lunch of the kind of crap you usually eat at kids' parties which she requested, watched Matilda the Musical on youtube (can't go to the theatre so it comes to you) with ice cream in an interval, it was unseasonably hot so we got a paddling pool out, sang happy birthday with cake on zoom with family and friends, at take-away pizza, then in the evening built a small fire and toasted marshmallows.
She told me today that it was her best birthday ever and the only thing coronavirus didn't ruin!! (it helped that she doesn't have many friends and wasn't sure if she really wanted a party with friends).

In a couple of weeks DC2 is 6, and I am trying to work out to make it fun for her. We don't know if going anywhere will be allowed e.g the zoo, a small theme park, we know we won't be able to see family or friends. I don't expect good weather. She has lots of friends and has been talking about her birthday party since about 2 days after her fifth birthday party, so it all feels a lot more challenging.

DSS turned 5 in April. I hired a load of soft play equipment and a mini bouncy castle and turned our living room into a big soft play (his favourite thing ever). Was just him and our little DD but they had an absolute ball. Then food, party games and a movie of his choice with lots of sweets. His mum still upstaged us though by having an actual party with 20+ people there that the police had to attend twice. He said the police coming was the best bit but our party was "still fun too"

Hopeisathingwithfeathers · 11/10/2020 21:34

Sorry should have said - DS turning 13 this month and twin DDs turning 11 just after Christmas. Thanks for the ideas so far. We all really need stuff to look forward to!

Virtual Disney rides looks cool! We are 5 so can’t really have anyone over but one of us could go out with birthday child(ren) and a couple of guests, if I could think of anything to do that wasn’t rubbish in winter.

I think part of the problem is that the shine of Zoom and ‘virtual’ anything has well and truly worn off for my kids now.

We took out son to a climbing/zip wire event followed by a sleepover and take away for 2 friends so staying within the rules.

MrsGradyOldLady · 11/10/2020 21:39

I've booked a drive in Halloween cinema thing for my daughter who'll be 13. And also a ski lesson so we could have chance to practice a bit before the skiing holiday we won't be going on in the new year...

SushiGo · 11/10/2020 21:43

We have done tie-dye kit at home which was good fun.

Some sort of bake off or Lego champions competition between family members with suitable prizes.

Buy a new film to watch. Lots of treat food.

Kitchen disco...

buckeejit · 11/10/2020 21:45

Didn't realise Matilda was on youtube-thanks!

Ds is 11 in a few weeks. He really wants his friend over for a sleepover. We're NI & numbers are high so we'll see. I know he'll like cosy presents & I'll have a sleepover with him or his sister will. I am going to order some more rechargeable tea lights & have them all over his room at night, which I know he will love & just get his favourite food & hopefully light the brazier outside for a bit & look at star constellations

Hazelnutlatteplease · 11/10/2020 21:51

Dominoes or other take away of choice. With all the extras.

For my birthday i did fake sausage and bacon McMuffins with Hash browns for breakfast, lunch was afternoon tea complete with scones, cake and finger sandwiches. The takeaway for tea. I watched Disney movies all day long. One of the best birthdays ever I think.
