What the hell is this implement thing (and how did it get in my car?)

Other items shown for scale.

I was emptying my car boot yesterday in preparation for my car's four-monthly trip to the car wash and came across this thing. I swear I've never seen it before and I certainly have no idea what it's for. It looks like a giant corkscrew, but the end isn't sharp.

I realise you won't be able to work out how it got in my car, but if I at least knew what it was then it might give me a clue.

well if you don't have a dog, is your partner controlling? Be careful if they suggest a picnic, you might just find yourself tethered and forced to drink soya milk.

thecatneuterer · 11/10/2020 10:56

@NigellaAwesome

Now I want a hunting hide. I quite like the idea of a collapsible chair covered with a tent with eye-holes.

Not for hunting, just when it gets too much with my children. Also good for the beach.

It's ace Hunting hide

Although I always think that, considering the sorts of places I use it, the camouflage aspect is a bit out of place - if it looked like an abandoned fridge or mattress it would blend in much better.

That's it!! MN has foiled his evil plan ...

Is that hunting hide waterproof? I can see it being the new Mumsnet scarf as MNetters are sat watching their childrens football/ rugby matches and as it's not clear like others I've seen you could have a stealthy doze and no one would know!

Blobby10 · 11/10/2020 11:15

I had something like that for screwing my spare wheel in place - could it be that? It took forever to unscrew to get the spare out so wouldn't be surprised if whoever took the spare wheel out didn't put it back in again Grin

Was your car second hand, could it have belonged to a previous owner? Somewhere inside mine is a detachable tow bar, not found it yet. I bought 1 car with a radio/CD player with the a detachable front that was missing (early 90's) so replaced the whole unit, 6 months later the original detachable front rolled out from under a seat. I dread to think what people find when they buy cars from me.

But, yes, a dog tether.

JacobReesMogadishu · 11/10/2020 11:20

Have you had the car from new? I lost a wetsuit in a van I used to own and sold it knowing the wetsuit was in there somewhere.

Yes it is. And if you also carry a plastic bottle plus shewee and/or travel bed pan, then you've got yourself a pop up toilet Grin

The car's only previous owner was my stepdad - also no dog.

And it's only been there since the last time I emptied it completely - so a few months at most [slattern]

Maybe it’s for tethering cat traps (in case you accidentally catch a lynx or something)

I'm glad OP explained about the reason for the cat trap. I was imagining her plans for a nice little Xmas earner. Tabby fur gloves, anyone?

thecatneuterer · 11/10/2020 11:57

It wasn't really a panther Grin, but that was the call that came through. They had previously tried the Police, the Fire Brigade and the RSPCA, who had all told them to sort it out themselves. Apparently they were terrified and had been barricading themselves in the living room for most of the day. They called us and, fearing for the welfare of said animal, I went.

When I arrived children were screaming and the mother was hysterical. I entered the bathroom, picked up a rather fat, purry big black cat that had somehow come in through the window but couldn't get out, and took him outside.

And as that story is a big anticlimax, I will tell a better one. I knew a man who was a fire fighter in the 60s. He was called to a fire in an East London terrace where he found a lion in the bedroom. He didn't manage to rescue it but apparently it survived:)

Nah - as I said - it needs to look like a discarded mattress for it to be really useful.

Dreading2020sSeasonFinale · 11/10/2020 12:03

Due to the shape of it I think it could very easily become entangled in a blanket, cat trap or wire carrier when picking up a cat. There's probably someone sitting at home scratching their head as to where their dog tether has gone. After donating their old towels to your rescue?

thecatneuterer · 11/10/2020 12:05

@Dreading2020sSeasonFinale Yep, I think that's the best explanation we're going to get.
