Is this worth it? One to one binge eating consultant

I need help with my binge eating and general poor diet. I had a free consultation with a binge eating therapist. It was brilliant. Lasted over an hour and talked about tricks to retrain your brain and it felt like something I could get on board with that would work. She talked about helping me in all areas of my life to do with exercise, food, self esteem. The free consultation was so promising and I would like to do it.
It's an 8 week programme. You have daily contact via email plus several phone calls with feedback each day too and she teaches strategies to help.
Should I do it? It's quite a lot of money? Interested to know how much others would think is reasonable to pay for this? And if it will work?

I actually worked as this kind of coach for a while. It can be incredibly helpful if you have the right person and the right mindset about it. I would avoid anyone who promises weight loss or a ‘cure’. But a good coach can help you think about what you do and why, look at it from a different direction and help you adjust your behaviours step by step in a positive way (not so that you must always stick to certain rigid rules or ‘fail’). They are your cheerleader not a sergeant major. They will help you find different coping mechanisms. Hopefully to approach your body from a positive, loving position rather than hating and punishing it, which is often the viewpoint of individuals who are overweight. They will probably also look with you at other areas of life which all affect how you think about and care for yourself - typically there is a similar pattern or food is a release and until you can change the cause (simple example, a job you hate), the symptom (bingeing) is unlikely to stop.

As a pp said, a lot will depend on your feeling about the person. It’s actually difficult to find officially professionally qualified people in this field so checking those won’t necessarily help, (Eg I did a qualification with a US organisation, equivalent of which doesn’t exist in the uk) but that’s not to say their help is going to be worthless and the cost per hour, as has been pointed out, really isn’t unreasonable. I would also add that some of the process (as with therapy) may not be enjoyable for you, it’s usually uncomfortable to examine the reasons behind unwanted behaviours and you need to be prepared for that and willing to ‘do the work’...your coach can’t do it for you.

If you want to PM I’m happy to chat more Smile
