iPhone/pad. Who knew you could do this! And anyone else got some useful tricks?

I’ve had iPhones and my iPad for years. Saw a clip on Facebook earlier that if you press and hold down space bar you can move the curser all over the page. WOW mind blown.
Just how many hours have I wasted deleting mistakes!

People will think you’re bringing back Morse code with the tapping! Grin

My baby knows how to go from app to app with a swipe, but it never works when I try. Obviously it must only works with tiny hands.

SingToTheSky · 10/10/2020 20:19

I only ever manage to do that by accident times!

Actually does anyone know why on an iPad I sometimes end up making one of the app windows smaller and it sort of hovers on one side? I can swipe it away but it doesn’t actually go away. Drives me mad.

Cornettoninja · 10/10/2020 20:37

Thanks @longcoffee - I went mad and set up the triple tap function as well as my app changer!

Thanks for the back double tap tip! Didn’t know that, not sure when it will come in useful but happy to give it a whirl Grin

Goodness, I do this all the time. No idea what I press to make it happen. I swipe and swipe and it bounces back.

It’s sooo annoying.

Lieinrequired · 10/10/2020 20:50

The back double tap only works on iPhone 8 and newer. One problem with it though - it is very sensitive. I have numerous unintended screenshots just from putting my phone down on my granite kitchen work surface.

In iMessages, when wanting to respond to a particular previous comment and the conversation has already moved on, double tap the specific comment and type in your response, it will then link your response with the comment you're responding to (saves a lot of confusion when the convo has moved on).

Usernamealreadyexists · 10/10/2020 23:26

@longcoffee brilliant - thank you!! Bloody frustrated with the two side buttons.

ladybird69 · 11/10/2020 00:04

Ooo thanks for all the other tips 😁 yes but with the space bar tip you can add letters etc into words rather than just get taken back to the end of the word! I was impressed anyway.
Off to play with my phone now thanks x

And can we change font? I bought a font app ages ago but it doesn’t seem to do anything!

My very favourite thing is if I need to copy and paste from one to the other - for eg you can highlight and select copy on your iPhone and then select paste on your iPad. This comes in handy so often for me!

I have an iPhone 11 and it doesn't exist on my phone. My friend has an X and he does have it. We just compared.

Bluntness100 · 11/10/2020 18:43

Weird, mine is an iPhone 11 and it works perfectly fine on mine.

Thimbleberries · 11/10/2020 18:53

The thing about the app windows getting smaller and just on one side - if I've understood you correctly - is a thing that is meant to help you type one-handed, as it brings it all closer to you so that you can hold the phone and type all with one hand. You can disable it in accessibility settings (something like reachability/one-handed mode)

BlusteryShowers · 11/10/2020 19:01

If you've got small children, you can "lock them in" to one app to stop them closing it and getting in a muddle or getting into apps you don't want them to.

The same process means that if you're setting them up to watch a film on Netflix or something, you can "grey out" the menu buttons so they can't click off the thing you set them up with.

KTD27 · 11/10/2020 19:04

@CovidStoleTheRainbow check you have iOS 14. I couldn’t find it on mine and that’s why.

If you swipe up so you can see all the windows you have open, one of the will be an extra Safari one with just that one tab in it. That might only be if you've managed to finally drag the little one off the screen though 🤔

I have no idea how to stop it happening though!

How does one do this??!
giftponderings · 11/10/2020 20:01

@everybodyknowsus

On settings-accessibility-guided access

And then select the toggle to on

Once you are on your selected movie etc, double press the home button and it will ask you to create a passcode,

Then it will ask you to draw a shape on your screen to 'grey' out the area you don't want access to. I draw a rough rectangle round the whole screen, and then you get to adjust it. And that's it. The movie will now play no matter what is tapped. Whatever volume you have it on will also stay that volume. To end this mode, double press again on home button, enter the code you created and tap end. It's very useful! Hope this explains it ok
@CovidStoleTheRainbow check you have iOS 14. I couldn’t find it on mine and that’s why.
I have the IOS 14.1

At the bottom of my friends page it has the option of 'back tap'. Which I don't have. But at the top of my page it says 'assistive touch' which he doesn't have.

So for those of you who have 'back tap' at the bottom of the page, do you have 'assistive touch' at the top?

It seems I have that instead.
Unfortunately though, back tap isn't an option in there either. They only give me an option of front page double tap for screen shots.

KTD27 · 14/10/2020 14:01

I have assisted touch at the top. But it’s off. Not sure if that makes a difference
