I shall try to keep it brief.

Me and DH have a car each. We are both named drivers on each others policy. He has commuting on his policy (employed) and I have business use (self employed) on mine.

I like to take his car when I go and see one particular client as his car is bigger and comfier for longer journeys and he takes mine into work instead.

So, because I am using his car with commuting for business use and he is using my car with business use for commuting....does that mean neither of us are insured because we don't have the correct category? Does that even make sense?

The things you think about at 3am when you cant sleep...........

I realise the only way to get a definite answer is by calling Direct Line, but am just musing for now.

Your own insurance usually covers you for driving other cars, but it may have more limitations than when you're driving your own car, you'd need to check your policy.

You could have a problem. He doesn't as your insurance will be for: Domestic, Commuting and Business - unless you have something like Taxi -driver insurance that only covers business use.
But his will be just Domestic and Commuting - its worth phoning and being honest it may make minimal difference to his premium - unless you are working as a Taxi driver etc.

I am fairly sure you wouldn't be covered on his car when used for your business. I am self-employed and broker said I wouldn't be covered if use DH's car but reverse not applicable to us so not sure when he uses your car.

MumandnotMum · 09/10/2020 16:37

Any car that is used for business use needs to be insured as such. The commuting comes with business use anyway so your husband would be fine.

You really should add it though, it could invalidate your insurance if you have an accident.

luckyrabbits · 09/10/2020 16:42

Put business on both it shouldn't make much difference to premium.

ToolkitQ · 09/10/2020 16:42

To add often the cheaper insurances don't cover you to drive another car, if they do then only 3rd party so not ideal. Really need to check your policy about driving other cars where not the named driver.
It wasn't an option on DH's insurance to include my business use as a named driver.

nonamenorma · 09/10/2020 16:43

He is insured on your car, you are not insured on his.

Business use is commuting to multiple, different places of work. So he can commute to his work just fine.

Commuting without business use is commuting to the same place of work every day, so you cannot take his car to a place of work different to his usual work.

I work in insurance if that helps.

Thank you all. You have confirmed what I thought (and feared). Thank goodness for late night musings.

I shall call Direct Line tomorrow and get them to amend the policy so business use is listed on his too.

Then again.....I wonder if I could just swap policies completely......DH really does like driving my car and I really like driving his. Nah, that would be a can of worms too much perhaps

I am a named driver on DHs car and he on mine. Our wording says Social Domestic and pleasure purposes and business use for policyholder & Spouse. On DSs policy we are both named drivers but only the policyholder(DS) is listed as having business use. Unless you have a high risk occupation there is usually no extra charge for adding business cover. DS had to add it to his when work decided to send him to another office for a course and even at age 20 there was no extra cost. We are all with Churchill - which may as well be direct line as they're all underwritten by the same people and their paperwork looks identical ( we have switched between the two)
