Are DFS sofas shite? Where did you get your suite?!

Currently in the market for a new suite.

I got burnt badly a few years ago when we bought a corner sofa from Harvey Norman. Lovely at first, but quickly began to look like a sack filled with old socks. Totally lost it’s shape and offers zero support. Now I have Furniture Purchase PTSD and I’m a bit stuck where to buy the replacement from.

I’ve seen a Joules armchair from DFS which I love- the rest of their range is nice, ok value and loads of choice so I’m tempted to just go for it.

Has anyone had one from there, do they last a decent period of time and still look presentable?

My backup is M&S but none of them are particularly exciting.

Black leather sofa, fenwicks £300
Still going strong 11 years later

madcatladyforever · 09/10/2020 13:51

Made.com sale. I got a sofa for £800 four seater with chaise for putting your legs up.

Gazelda · 09/10/2020 13:52

My last 2 have been from DFS.

First one lasted 14 years before I got bored with it. I was single and childless at the time, which prob helped it's longevity.

2nd one is a sofa and sofa bed. Had them since 2008. Fabric covers, hard back. They've survived DD's arrival and childhood. The sofa bed gets well used and us actually comfy.

I don't think DFS are the most fashionable, and some of their styles are niche, but I think you can get something reasonably timeless and quality from there.

My sofa replaced a leather pendragon that I’d also had years
Company no longer trade

TheRuleofStix · 09/10/2020 13:54

Had our DFS sofa for 14 years - survived two kids and four cats and only just replacing it now!

Very good value Grin.

claireb7rg · 09/10/2020 13:59

2 sofas from dfs here, 5 1/2 years old and still fine (though they need a clean at the moment due to cats)

Metallicalover · 09/10/2020 14:03

Marks and Spencer's. I have my two sofas for 7 years and they're still brand new!

MondeoFan · 09/10/2020 14:05

Ours is from Furniture Village it was quite expensive £1,600 but we've had it 18 years. Really comfy with leather arms and bottom part with material seats and massive cushions.
Time for a new sofa soon I think.

GoldStripes · 09/10/2020 14:22

I wouldn’t recommend Sofology at all, and I actually think they’re really expensive compared to other sofa retailers!

We’ve had our sofa and armchair for 4 years now, and they started looking really worn after about 2 years. They look awful now!

The filling makes a difference too I think - we went for fibre as the sales assistant told us that the fibre filling is more comfortable than foam. It is, for the first 6 months, after which it starts to look like a sack of spuds no matter how aggressively you try to plump it! DH and I constantly have bad backs now, we’re just waiting to have enough money to replace them.

My mum has a Natuzzi sofa which is still going fairly strong even after about 8 years, but it was horrifically expensive.

Endeavormorse · 09/10/2020 14:31

I've just bought a sofa from Sofology and a chair from DFS, both great quality and no issues.

Lilac95 · 09/10/2020 14:32

We bought our DFS sofa 2 years ago. A large 2 seater (more like a 3) and a regular 2 seater. Absolutely no complaints, I’ve washed the cushion covers in a quick wash and they came up lovely. Again we went with a sofa that had a proper back not scatter cushions, mainly as I’m a big girl and my partners 6”2. Very comfy for a nap and they’ve kept their shape and colour. Also bought a matching footstool that’s had a battering and still looks fab!

We went with DFS as I found others expensive for the quality. We waited for the sale and got all of it for £850, should’ve been £1500ish.

BashfulClam · 09/10/2020 15:35

My last dfs sofa lasted 8 years and we only got rid of it due to moving and it not really fitting out new room, I miss it. Our neighbours had a terrible time with one furniture store and after 24 weeks and sofa being ‘lost’ twice they got a lovely one from DFS for cheaper and in 2 weeks. The main thing is measure it. It will look small in a big showroom then they deliver a big fuck off sofa that makes you a bit dubious!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 09/10/2020 15:51

Ours are from Alstons. Not directly, we got them from an independent local furniture shop.

They're our 2nd set from them (the first set lasted about 12 years and were only replaced because the cats had scratched them up beyond repair) and hopefully we'll get another decade out of them (cats permitting).

LeanishMachine · 09/10/2020 17:05

Ours is more than 20 years old from John Lewis and not even close to needing replacement. I think it was c. £4000 for two sofas and an armchair which must have been a lot of money back then, but it's proved excellent value for money, having survived the entire upbringing of two boys.

Sadly, I suspect it wouldn't be equivalent quality if purchased now.

PaperMonster · 09/10/2020 18:39

Sofa and arm chair from DFS six years ago - comfy and looks good still, despite not so small children jumping of the sofa!

FlippinNoah · 09/10/2020 18:44

DFS 5 years on, still very comfy.

I paid a bit extra for the firmer seats, so glad I did. The 'plumped up' seats you see in the adverts get lots of bad reviews as they go saggy very quickly but the firmer ones still look like new 5 years later.

PathOfLeastResitance · 09/10/2020 18:48

We have one from DFS and I will never buy from them again. The delivery process was rubbish - promised a weekend and then got very rude when they tried a Tuesday (without telling us first!). Explained at the time that’s e wouldn’t buy it unless it could be a weekend delivery. Sold us this protective coating that was demonstrated as Making the liquid pool on the fabric - it does no such thing on our sofa.
The fabric has faded.
The cushions have slumped and have never really maintained their shape.
We paid for coasters to go on the feet to make it easier to move around - they weren’t attached and then when we requested them it took 2 months for them to arrive and they came off very quickly.
The insurance they sold us isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.
Basically..... DFS are dead to me.

Sceptre86 · 09/10/2020 18:53

We got ours from Furniture Village and it has nearly been 3years now. It still looks good as new, admittedly we don't entertain that much so it mostly just gets used by us. It was also a reasonable price.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 09/10/2020 18:57

I've done a lot of sofa research, and there are various places which manufacture sofas in the UK for 'big name' brands. I'm going to buy from one of those. DFS reviews are shockingly bad on the whole.

Plus I would prefer to buy British, given the shocking state of our domestic economy thanks to Lockdown.

I've had mixed experiences with Ikea sofas in the past. The old Ektorp was the best, IME.

ChocolateCoffeeCake · 09/10/2020 18:59

Next. Lasted years.

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 09/10/2020 19:08

We got rid of our last dfs this year after 6 years and it still looked great. We did pay the extra for the foam seats but it was still in good condition considering we have three kids a dog and a cat. We only replaced it because we needed a sofa bed.
Replaced it with another dfs we did choose the same range but with a combination of pillow and formal backs with a higher seat as both sets of parents getting older so want them to be able to get up and down easily.
Only had the new one a few months but happy with it so far

AGnu · 09/10/2020 19:19

We got ours 10 years ago from Furniture Village. One of the cushions has always been slightly too narrow for its space but I couldn't be bothered to do anything about it. It's still comfortable but it's definitely showing its age - various stains a couple of the seams are coming apart now.

I've been vaguely toying with the idea of getting a new one but every time I look I get annoyed. Most sofas are too deep for my little legs & sometimes we have relatives visit who are quite formal people so I can't curl up like I usually do & end up either sitting with my legs sitting straight out or having 2 thick cushions behind me, or just perching on the edge which is uncomfortable for any extended period. I also get annoyed that most 3-seaters only have 2 cushions. I have 3 children who all want to sit on the same sofa but none of them want to sit on the join so we have daily arguments about lack of personal space as 2 try to squeeze on one cushion & the other spreads out happily. We don't have space for recliners or corner sofas - why can't normal 3-seat sofas have, y'know, 3 seats?!

One of these days, I'm going to start playing the lottery, then I'll win & use my millions to commission my perfect sofa. Grin

Moonshine160 · 09/10/2020 19:27

We’ve had our DFS sofas around 5 years, we actually bought the cheapest ones in the shop but paid slightly more to have a firmer foam in the cushions. Despite a few stains on them from DC they still look and feel as they did when new.

PolaDeVeboise · 09/10/2020 19:50

I pine for my DFS sofas. Had them for 13 years and were in great nick when we got rid - had moved house and wanted to re-decorate. Everyone who sat on them remarked that they were the comfiest sofas ever. Current 2 sofas cost us £4K and each one has a huge burst along one edge.

DipSwimSwoosh · 09/10/2020 19:52

Ours is DFS and fine.
