What time do you go to bed?

As I get older my sleep is awful, so I'm constantly tired. Consequently bedtime gets earlier.

I think I need a new routine, maybe stay up late and inc an afternoon nap. Or will this make it worse?

I'm retired so a nap is possible some days.

Particularly interested to know how old you are too... I imagine mums with little ones go earlyish as they're up early, younger with no kids maybe later?

What about older retired like me? (I'm late 50s)

I have three young DC (7 and under). Older two go to bed at 7.30, up at 7. Youngest goes to bed at 7, up at 5.30 😭. DH and I go at 10.30-11ish. Should definitely go earlier due to the early start but 9ish onwards is the only time we get to sit and relax.
I sleep pretty badly too so am always exhausted.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/10/2020 21:05

Any time between 7.30pm and 2am.
I'm 42 but don't work due to disability and live alone.
I'd love to have a more regular sleep pattern.

SummerInSun · 08/10/2020 21:05

I'm mid 40s. Lights out around 11-11:30pm. Wake up between 6:30-7am. Young DC who don't sleep in so never any sleep in for me. Sometimes manage a short nap on weekends. So usually about 7 hours sleep a night, though I feel better if I manage closer to 7 and a half.

Try reading Matthew Walker's book Why We Sleep. Really interesting.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 08/10/2020 21:05

Oh I’m 35 by the way.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 08/10/2020 21:07

I have a toddler and go to bed at about 10, asleep by 10:30. She sleeps really well so don’t often see her before 7, but I like to get up at 6 to have time to get myself up and ready before she’s up.

Queenfreak · 08/10/2020 21:07

I'm 43, and have a 3 year old that didn't get the memo she should be sleeping through by now. She never has, and at one point I didn't have more than 4/5 hours a night for nearly a year.
I have never felt so bloody tired! So I generally go up between 9 and 10, read for 30 mins and then wake several times so that I can really enjoy my 630am wake up!

Natalie654321 · 08/10/2020 21:08

I am 30, have a 14 month old and am 36 weeks pregnant.
I go up to bed at 9, then sleep at around 10.
I am up between 6 and 7 every day 😴😴😴

Indecisivelurcher · 08/10/2020 21:09

I believe you naturally need less sleep as you get older, and also naturally sleep a bit lighter. So it might seem counterintuitive, but you might feel more rested if you go to bed a bit later but sleep better?! Don't quote me on that but could be worth reading up on...

I'm 38 with 2 young kids who wake me up between 5:45 and the occasional miraculous 7, I go to bed to sleep at 10.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 08/10/2020 21:10

Ddogs have last wee at 10pm.. Prompted by one of the ddogs!!.
Bed and watch TV til about 11.30pm

I am 49.

MyNameForToday1980 · 08/10/2020 21:11

I'm 40.

I aim for bed for 10:30, but mainly finally lie down at midnight.

Up at 7am (7:30 at the weekend).

We usually wake just before DD4 who sleeps form 7:30pm to 7:30am.

lighthouseinthesnow · 08/10/2020 21:12

This made me smile OP as I'm currently trying to figure out nap patterns for my baby and it never occurred to me that one day I may be trying to figure them out for myself!

I'm 34 and have a 4 year old and 8 month old. The 4 year old is a fairly good sleeper, the 8 month old not so much. I go to bed by 10pm 😴

Jayaywhynot · 08/10/2020 21:14

I'm 54, work full time, go to bed at 10pm, up at 5.40am. I don't sleep well because of the menopause, night sweats etc. I put the fan on for a cool breeze and the whiring of the fan acts like white noise, it helps

AgeLikeWine · 08/10/2020 21:16

I’m an owl. Always have been. On school nights I’m usually in bed by one, and I stay up late at weekends.

Ragwort · 08/10/2020 21:16

I sleep better if I go to bed later .... I think a short nap might be a good idea if it is possible; I had a day off work today and after a brisk walk I had a bath and a lie down (only about 20 mins) before our evening meal and felt better for it. Sometimes I get really tired around 9 ish so go to bed but then end up wide awake at 3am. I probably only need six hours sleep at my age (early 60s).

Kote · 08/10/2020 21:20

I go to bed around 10pm usually. I'm mid-20s with no DC. I need a lot of sleep to avoid feeling completely drained.. this is probably not normal!

I think this might be part of my problem. I might not need as much as I think I do... just need some unbroken sleep

It doesn't seem 5 mins since I was like you... I could have slept on a washing line if only the little dears had let me. Now they've flown the nest I can't do it 🙄

  1. 3 kids 6 and under.

I go to sleep between 1am and 2am usually. Up at 9.

Only one child up early (the 3 year old) and even shes not up till 8am! Husband looks after her till the rest of arise at 9Grin

cremuel · 08/10/2020 21:25

I try to be in bed by half nine and read till10. I get up at 6 because this is when I get my best work done. I need to be in bed for 8 hours to have a good chance of 7 hours sleep, as I don’t always sleep well. I’m 45, kids are 11 and 12 and largely take care of themselves in the morning - could sleep in as late as I like, but then I’d never get enough work done as I hate working in the evening. DH is the opposite - often works till 11 or 12 at night, sleeps till around half eight. I don’t think he takes his sleep seriously enough.

Biffsboys · 08/10/2020 21:25

Usually go to bed around midnight and back up at 6 30 . I usually have a half hour doze on sofa around 4pm . I’m 50

HMSSophie · 08/10/2020 21:29

I'm mid 50s. Asleep by 12 up at 7. Retired. Often nap in the afternoon for an hour or so. I used to sleep 10!hours a night when I could but those days are long gone.

badlydrawnbear · 08/10/2020 21:42

Between 10 and 11, aiming to turn light off and go to sleep at 11.
Am late 30s, 2 DC in primary school, shift work job.
Get up at 5.55am for work, 6.45am on school days that I am not at work, between 6 and 8 if not school or work depending on when DC wake up.
Also, do an average of 1 night shift a week where I go to bed at 10am

toffeekiwi · 08/10/2020 21:45

About 10pm and sleep from about midnight to 3am and then 5am to 7am when I reluctantly get up.

leafeater · 08/10/2020 21:45

9.45pm is a trigger for me. Off to bed and awake between 5am and 6am. One teenager left at home, but I'm massively antisocial in the evenings. My sleep is so important to me!

shinynewapple2020 · 09/10/2020 00:19

I normally go to bed between midnight and 1 am . Get up around 8/8.30 . Prior to WFH I went to bed around 11, got up around 7 . I would love to be disciplined enough to go to bed earlier but every night it's the same; realise I have 7 1/2 hours before I need to be up so force myself to go to bed .

I'm mid 50s.

I went to bed a lot earlier when I had young DC .
