How do you wash your water bottle?

This seems like a stupid question.

Up to now, Dd has had a cylindrical plastic water bottle.
When washing up, I can get my hand inside with a washing up sponge to get it clean - or it can go in the dishwasher.

Now Dd wants a metal bottle with a tapering neck (Chilly's).

Am I missing something - how do you get a sponge in it to wash it properly? They don't seem to be dishwasher safe either.
Everyone seems to have them, so clearly they must be cleaning them somehow.

Use a bottle brush.

BexR · 08/10/2020 19:38

Denture tablets

pinkbalconyrailing · 08/10/2020 19:39

bottle brush and ocassionally dishwasher if the bottle is suitable for that.

Swish them about in a bowl of fairy liquid then rinse under the tap. Isn't that how everyone does it?

FizzyPink · 08/10/2020 19:41

I put mine in the dishwasher but only when it’s starting to look a bit gross. I really should wash it out a bit more to be honest but I only use it for water

lucysmam · 08/10/2020 21:00

I do the same as MoiraNotRuby with ours. Swish about in the bowl, rinse under the tap, on an evening while washing up.

1/2 sterilising tablet in each every now and again to get rid of the smell of blackcurrant dilute that seems to stick.

If it's being used with juice then I use sterilizing tablets - 30 min soak including the lid/sports cap and through rinse - once a week. If used for water, I sterilize less often, although the sports lid I wash regularly. Don't use the dishwasher. I don't have a chilly's but a similar nicely decorated thermal bottle went very dull very quickly in the dishwasher. I wouldn't risk it again.

Leave it to soak in hot soapy water. Rinse.

SmithfamilyRobinson · 08/10/2020 21:51

I had to put mine in Milton. Simple rinse out worked well then water started tasting bleurgh.

bottle brush

I wash all our water bottle every day with a bottle brush. Sometimes I then put it in the dishwasher for an extra go through. But the dishwasher can’t clean it properly, it has to be a bottle brush.

Parker231 · 08/10/2020 22:00

Only buy water bottles which can go in the dishwasher.

OntheWaves40 · 08/10/2020 22:02

Swish it, I only clean round where mouth have been and outside and lid. Inside only has water so a rinse will do.

Whathappenedtothelego · 08/10/2020 22:09

I think I will invest in a bottle brush - I feel the inside needs a proper good scrub.

Bottle brush in normal washing up liquid then fill with cold water and pop a milton tablet in and set a timer for 15 mins.

Lids go in a bowl with tablet fragment and water. A plate on top keeps them submerged.

I have a great plastic "lawn" where they dry upside down without falling everywhere.

I have too many reusable metal bottles...

MrsCatE · 08/10/2020 22:17

I would investigate first if it can be separated - quite a few can be undone. Mine can be separated into 3; the top half turned upside down screws into the lid to make a Goblet and the bottom becomes a Tumbler. Easy to handwash or stick in dishwasher if taken apart.

Whathappenedtothelego · 09/10/2020 07:59

@MrsCatE do you know what brand yours is - that sounds ideal!

I thought it was a "Chilly" - doh. It's a "Dopper". I bought it from John Lewis at a very good sale price - but can't remember what!
