Where to buy furniture

We've moved into our dream home that we will be in for 30+ years. It's time for the Ikea to go and to invest is some nice furniture but we don't know where to shop!

We like the style of Holloways and are looking for other shops like them.

It needs to be traditional (or modern country if such a thing exists) and well made. The kind of furniture that lasts a lifetime.

I would happily fill the house with antiques but it's a potton house with beams galore so too much wood just doesn't work.

Would love to hear any suggestions please!

The cotswold company have gorgeous stuff and excellent quality

If you live in a town or city look at local shops nearby. That includes department stores - if you still have one - and independent small retailers who sell odd wooden products.

John Lewis's.

Our bed is a sleigh bed from M&S.

For kids rooms, I highly recommend Children’s Bed Centres . The quality and service is superb.

West Elm

local auction houses, eBay. You will get a lot more for your money second hand (and the quality of older items is often higher).

Darklane · 08/10/2020 20:53

Auction houses, definitely.
You’ll get glorious Georgian stuff for less than Ikea. Furniture is very out of fashion at the moment, except for dreadful plastic sixties stuff that sells for more that it did back when new & rusting metal office stuff Confused

RedMarauder · 09/10/2020 20:00

I was told to be careful of second hand wooden furniture due to wood worm so be careful buying that on eBay. Auction houses are fine.

However on eBay there are lots of independent retailers who sell wooden furniture. Plus there are random retailers who sell seconds/ex-display furniture from well-known retailers.

Have a look round a few local antiques centres. We’ve got some lovely ones near us that have always got beautiful furniture for sale. It’s not always centuries old dark wood either, they have some really nice painted stuff too.

flowerycurtain · 09/10/2020 20:31

Thank you for the suggestions.

I do love a nice Georgian piece I'm just not sure it would go with all the Beams we have.

Oka is good for modern country stuff. Maison du Monde might have some pieces to your liking too. Wayfair stocks tons of all sorts of stuff.

JoJoSM2 · 09/10/2020 20:41

Sorry. I’ve just looked on the Holloways website. Mid century style. For that, West Elm, Heals, Habitat or the Conran Shop etc depending on what price point you’re after.

flowerycurtain · 09/10/2020 21:01

Loving Maison du Monde and Okra. Thank you.

I get lost in the wayfair website!!

Happy to pay fairly hefty prices for the right lifetime piece.

If you buy antiques, they keep their value so you can sell them if you want to.

Retrouvious is fun.

Sofa: natuzzi
Stonehouse and Baker

Retrouvious is fun! Thank you. Great find.

So far this evening I've nearly bought two beautiful bookcases and a pair of oak doors!!

Good, good. Before you buy anything get a cuppa and some interiors mags and have a flick.
