Hypertension - what’s likely to happen?

DM, 55, non smoker . Bit overweight (BMI 28 or so) . Doesn’t drink much . Diet is pretty shit- doesn’t eat fruit much but does eat veg once or twice a day .

Huge family history - great x 2 grandmother, great grandmother, grandmother, aunt, grandfather, his ent brothers and sisters, both mums brothers all have or have died from heart disease . Vascular dementia, strokes, CHD . One has an ICD . All have to get regular screening anyway .

Mum now looks to be going through process of being diagnosed with HTN too . BP been between 130/80 - 169/106 . Been elevated for ages and ages and ages but always told probably white coat . Now they’re not so convinced .

Been told she’s to go for an ECG, urine sample and bloods next week .

What’s likely to happen next? Meds? I’m her full time carer (mental illness) so heavily involved . She’s very stressed out by it all which concerns me as surely stress is just going to make it worse . I don’t want anything to happen to her, she’s all I’ve got really . Am I right in hoping that meds can make a huge difference?

Mine was way higher than that. Has she had one of those 24 hour blood pressure monitors?

Medication will definitely help, if her team think that's the way forward. How does she feel about the idea of taking medication in general? You mention MH issues, do you think she would be able to reliably take meds? Depending on her situation, she might need prompting or support to make sure she takes them everyday.

Please try not to worry, and to reassure her. It's high sure but not that high, so much better to try to get on top of it now.

Also you say she's stressed - she might possibly find she feels much better and more relaxed once blood pressure is lower. It could be making any anxiety worse. So if her doctor wants her to try medication, do encourage her.
