Does your primary school allow children to walk home alone?

Straw poll. Are children at your primary school (up to age 11) allowed to walk home alone?

Yes, from y3. Mine started walking home in y4

TeacupDrama · 08/10/2020 16:20

In Scotland generally P3 -P4 upwards but a parental not school decision
Legally once a parent sends a letter saying my child "teacup"will walk to school and back alone with my permission there is nothing the school can do unless they genuinely believe it is a risk for that specific child on that specific journey not a blanket rule
social services are not interested unless a specific risk so if 7 year old Fred lives next door to school there is highly unlikely to be a child specific risk but 9 year old Fred that has to cross a dual carriageway with no crossing point then walk a mile is a risk.

Schools like to give the impression they can stop a Y4 or 5 from leaving alone but in reality they can't

As a primary supply teacher, I’m given a list of who is allowed to walk home/leave without an adult.

Year 5/6 with written permission. Same for the school I work at.

BobBobBobbing · 08/10/2020 16:27

Was y3 and above for ages and then they changed it to y6 only really annoying ds1 who then had to stop walking home.

Ds2 is now in year 5 and has been given special permission as I said I wasn't comfortable with the lack of social distancing going on at pick up. We only live 2 mins away and there is only one small side street to cross. Dh grew up here and would walk home at the end of the day and for lunch from reception age!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 08/10/2020 16:28

Year 5 and 6 with parent permission

Feefifo9 · 08/10/2020 16:29

Year 5 and 6 with parental permission slip

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 08/10/2020 16:30

Not until year 6, and only with a parental note sent in.

Apparently the new head has changed it since mine left so its not allowed until the last term of year 6!

Moonsick · 08/10/2020 16:31

Year 5 and 6 yes.
Year 4 with parental permission.

Almost all year 6 leave the school by themselves.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/10/2020 16:32

Y5 and Y6 can walk home alone with written permission.

OlegBurov · 08/10/2020 16:32

Comefromaway · 08/10/2020 16:33

Mine have left now but no, they weren’t.

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 08/10/2020 16:33

onemouseplace · 08/10/2020 16:33

Bingowin · 08/10/2020 16:33

Yes from year 5 (London)

PaperMonster · 08/10/2020 16:33

Years 5 and 6 can but only if they have permission.

Chickenitalia · 08/10/2020 16:33

Year 4 onwards. No need for anything in writing.

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 08/10/2020 16:35

Y6 with a signed consent form.

Can take a sibling who is in Y3,Y4 or Y5 home also if a consent form is signed for the sibling also.

Very strict and monitored.

TokyoSushi · 08/10/2020 16:38

Yr 5 and Yr6 with parental permission here. Most of Yr 5 don't, most of Yr 6 do.

TokyoSushi · 08/10/2020 16:38

No siblings allowed though unless also in 5 or 6.

unmarkedbythat · 08/10/2020 16:39

In year 5 with written parental permission if school is satisfied with the arrangements. Universally in year 6.

bluezzzzz · 08/10/2020 16:39

I am in Scotland. P1and p2 handover to parent. No one checks after that so kids can walk home alone. My Ds didn't do it until p7 which is later than most.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 08/10/2020 16:40

Yes from y5, with a parental consent form signed. They children usually seem start after Christmas in y6 though, unless they live very close.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 08/10/2020 16:40

The, not they

TheGriffle · 08/10/2020 16:40

Year 4 and up with parental permission here (given once at the beginning of the year).
