Silly Q about carpet fitting & doors?

I have heard of many people needing to 'shave' a bit off their doors when they get new carpets. Just curious really as to how this works. I would assume a joiner would be necessary but how would the carpet fitter proceed if I don't have a live in joiner and my carpet doesn't fit? Would I be expected to take doors off myself? Would the fitter take them off and leave them for me to then get a joiner? Do they shave them themselves?

How thick a carpet are you having ?
I've never had to shave anything off the bottom of a door whenever I've had a new carpet (a lot of times over 30 yrs of home owning)

Our carpet fitter said he would take them off if needed and leave them off. As it was they didn’t need to come off but we couldn’t close them until a joiner came in and shaved them. The carpet company did offer to recommend a joiner but we got our own in.

Thanks, this is what I expected to happen really.

Our fitter took the doors off. He replaced the ones that would fit and the company had a handy man who we booked to come the next day and ease the ones that needed it.

I had exactly this on Saturday .... the fitter removed the door and it’s currently leaning up against the wall on the landing ..... I have a local handyman coming tomorrow to shave a bit off and then rehang the door

I’ve had to do this in other rooms in the past and it’s always been the same

Thanks all. Sounds like it's not such a strange question after all!!

Depends where you get the carpet. If buying from a large chain just ask when you buy it and they'll usually book you with a fitter of theirs who can trim doors.
