Parking! What wording is best for a leave my dropped kerb clear sign?

I have a dropped kerb onto a drive where our campervan is parked (and no, there are no covenants saying I can't park it there).

Parking is in short supply where we live and there is a gap between my dropped kerb and the next one which is only just big enough for two small cars. For some weird reason, the boundaries of all the properties are at an angle which means that our drives are too. Consequently, if someone parks over the edge of my dropped kerb, it makes it really difficult to get the van in and virtually impossible to get it out because the road is narrow and I can't swing it round enough.

So I need a sign. Is 'Please don't park over any part of this dropped kerb' or 'Please leave this dropped kerb completely clear' better?

I could pay to have the dropped kerb extended but a) that would cost a lot and b) mean that only one car could park between the two kerbs. I don't really want to reduce the street parking any further because quite a few of my neighbours have no off street parking.

I can do a picture if you like Smile

How about:
Don’t fucking park over the dropped kerb. Tank requires access at all time. Failure to comply will result in total annihilation.

Too much?

Signs are useless as they will just be ignored

You need a physical barrier ie bollards

Bamaluz · 07/10/2020 18:20

Look into getting a H bar painted on the road by the council, they overlap the driveway either side to leave it clear.
Otherwise the completely clear wording, and add do not overlap.

DailyLotion · 07/10/2020 18:21

Honestly, just don't. If people aren't being considerate a sign isn't going to change that, it's far more likely to rub them up the wrong way.

Presumably this is only a handful of people, talk to them.

omega3 · 07/10/2020 18:21

Get the council out to paint the no parking line?

adagio · 07/10/2020 18:23

I would try and get a ‘H’ line painted on the road if you can convince the council, makes the total width of the dropped curbs more obvious.
To be fair I don’t think anyone will read any signs, sorry.
Unless it’s a comedy one that amusingly notes you will no doubt hit them with the larg ‘van if they park over the curb and accept no liability for this. Grin

I don't know who they are. My neighbours don't park over it but we live very close to the station so it's often commuters.

The kind of driver who parks over a dropped kerb isn't the kind to adhere to a home made sign.

It's the street! I can't put bollards on it although it is really tempting ...Grin

Sorry I couldn’t do better. iPhones suck. Just make the text better, print it, laminate it, and mount it outside your drive 😂

I cannot tell you how tempted I was today to just take the rear bumper off the car that is there.

I think an H would help.
That car might think that it isn't over the kerb (seeing as it's not that close to the pavement kerb either they might be spatially challenged!). An H would remove any doubt that it's innocent

RedDiamond · 07/10/2020 18:42

Definitely get the Council to paint the H markings. We told them about a parking problem we had and they happily came along and put the H on.

SoupDragon · 07/10/2020 18:52

I would try and get a ‘H’ line painted on the road

Preferably whilst a car is parked there

I've applied for my H! Thank you SmileSmile

I thought you had to prove it was a problem but I've just written what I have here. Some people treat dropped kerbs like yellow lines - as long as their wheels aren't on them, they're okay.

I basically now have my van on the drive but cannot get it off again within making 247 3 point turns until this bloke moves the car.

Once a woman was parking there and I said she was overhanging my dropped kerb and she replied 'yes but you can get your car off can't you?' I said yes I can but it won't be easy and it should be. She moved her car. She parks on my street most days and I like to give her a cheery wave Grin

Call the Council parking people and get them ticketed. Councils are short of money at the moment.

ExclamationPerfume · 07/10/2020 19:21

Our council rules are that you can park over the sloping bit. It's only the actual flat dropped kerb you can't park over. The car in your photo is not overhanging.

Hercules12 · 07/10/2020 19:27

We have an H. Makes no fucking difference. Also just advisable so can't get people ticketed.

DailyLotion · 07/10/2020 19:42

Now, I've always seen those markings as Is not Hs Grin

But the H says otherwise because it's painted up to the point the kerb is dropped.

Obviously it may not stop people altogether but it might help. If not, I'll have to get the dropped kerb extended so there is only room for a single car between the drives. It's a bit cuntish but

Clymene · 15/10/2020 19:03

I just thought I'd update this thread to say the council came out today and have agreed to paint the H across my dropped kerb. The man said he could completely see why it was needed.

So thank you @adagio for your suggestion! I have a vague memory I looked into it a while back but the council website made it sound v unlikely to be granted.

I predict a rash of them appearing down my street in the near future Grin
