Dutch oven that isn't La Creuset

ladybee28 · 07/10/2020 17:24

Looking for a good quality, sturdy Dutch oven for this winter (and beyond), but don't really fancy paying La Creuset prices.

Reviews online of Lodge all look good, but they don't ship to where I am.

Anyone got something they'd recommend?

I have one from Sainsbury's, it's great to use.

Like PP, Sainsbury’s own are reasonably priced and good quality

I had a Tesco one and Sainsbury one which I’ve been using for years.Great for cooking on hob and oven.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/10/2020 17:49

I’ve got Sainsburys cast iron griddle and it’s very good. I know I shouldn’t but it goes through the dw.

I've got a Tesco one, and it's very good.

Sainsburys usually put theirs in the sale just after Christmas if you can wait that long.

Aldi do them a couple of times a year. Their last time was only a few weeks ago - may be worth checking in-store if you have a localAldi.

I have both Le Creuset and Sainsbury's - genuinely cannot tell the difference between them.

adagio · 07/10/2020 17:53

I’ve got an old 28cm Le creuset bought from amazon when the internet was still a fledgling for £67 including a frying pan. At the time I was like ShockShock at spending so much on a bloody saucepan but I’ve used it to death in fairness (I batch cook).

Seems amazing value now Grin

I have also got an IKEA one which is much smaller but just as good for general cooking of smaller volumes.

Another vote for sainsbury's. They often have beautiful pastel shaded cast iron pots. We have several. They're every bit as good as Le Creuset.

ladybee28 · 07/10/2020 17:59

Sainsbury's! Who would have thought....?!

Still gutted –I live in Spain and they won't deliver here –but good to know!

Denby ones are good, more expensive than supermarket, but less than Le Cr.

ladybee28 · 07/10/2020 18:54

@Froggytoady I haven't seen any – the kitchen areas seem to contain about 47 different types of frying pan, two sad-looking saucepans and not much else!

But I could definitely have a proper hunt (am just being lazy hoping to find something online Smile )

A couple of years ago I got one which is the absolute spitting image of a Le Creuset from Lidl and cost about £25-ish.

rbe78 · 08/10/2020 12:21

I've had a Chasseur one for years and years and it's awesome. Still expensive, but much less than Le Creuset.

GiantKitten · 08/10/2020 12:23

I have a large Sainsbury’s one - it performs as well as le Creuset (and the surface is shiny so it doesn’t stain as badly) but is way heavier, so I’d recommend building up your biceps before getting one Grin

GiantKitten · 08/10/2020 12:28

Aldi had their own in very recently too.
My store still has a few of the shallow black ones.
They’re worth looking out for.
(Also noticed from google that Dunelm & Argos have nice looking ones).

I have a pyrex one. Can't remember how much it cost, but definitely not that much or I wouldn't have bought it.

AnnaMagnani · 08/10/2020 12:33

I have a Le Creuset and a Lidl knock off. Both as good as each other.

JingsMahBucket · 08/10/2020 13:46

IKEA or Lidl are both good options.

CeibaTree · 08/10/2020 13:56

We've got both Le Creuset and the Aldi version - there is no difference in quality. If you sign up to the Aldi emails you'll get notified when they are available again - they sell out very quickly!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/10/2020 14:01

I have several Le Creuset casserole dishes (wedding presents 26 years ago) and they are still amazing.
i also have a Chasseur dish which is very impressive.
I have a cast iron shallow casserole from Sainsburys, initially I would have said it was as good as the Le Creseut and Chaseur ones but actually it hasn't lasted as well. It's now about 8 years old and really come to the end of its life. However i could buy one every 8 years four times over before it ended up being more expensive than the Le Creuset.

InspirationUnavailable · 08/10/2020 14:04

I was eyeing up some lovely blue cask iron casseroles in John Lewis the other day - can’t speak for their quality but they looked lovely!
