For Year 4? Some of the class are just eight years old. To me it looks more like a Year 6 SATS question, but DGS had it as part of his homework last night.
"Rosie rounds a number to the nearest 1,000 and gets 3,000.
Amir rounds a number to the nearest 100 and gets 3,400.
Rosie's number is 100 more than Amir's.
What could their numbers be?

Rosie's number =
Amir's number =
We did work out answers eventually, but surely some eight year olds, perhaps doing it on their own, would struggle ?

Yes it's a typical year 4 autumn term place value question. It's a reasoning question so asking children to think deeply about what they know regarding place value and apply it. It's supposed to be a bit of a challenge.

I’d guess they were meant to do it by trial and error. My DS is in Y3 and they are starting to order numbers of more than 1,000 so I’d believe he could do this next year.

Or actually draw the range of the two numbers on a number line. That shouldn’t be beyond them?

There's more than one answer, aren't they just meant to be understanding the principles of rounding?

Doesn't sound too difficult to me

It could be a SATs question, as they cover the whole key stage not just work from yr6. By yr6 we are rounding to 2decimal places and to millions, so this would seem like a question aimed at the learning from other years.

OK, just me then! Grin
