Why are Barbie houses SO expensive?

Am I missing something?

Dd has got into Barbie and would like a house for Christmas. I was looking at them online today and almost had a heart attack. £200 plus for the dream house that’s just a bit of plastic and not even that big. Even on eBay they are daft amounts - ones with loads missing are still over a hundred.

Can anyone recommend a cheaper version that would for the dolls? I could get her grandparents to get it between the two of them, but there is part of me that just refuses to have that much paid out for a bit of plastic tat.

Symths have a wooden doll house for £80 that is suitable for barbie, or there’s plenty online, my 3 DD’s have one each all different styles and play with them for many hours and have added lots of furniture to them over years perfect for barbie, type kidkrafts wooden barbie doll house online will give you plenty of options depending on budget, check they are suitable for 12 inch dolls just to be sure

@Makesmilingyourbesthobby thank you I’ll take a look at some wooden ones, would probably last longer for baby Dd as well

We have a wooden doll house that came from asda living a few years ago. It's quite large with 3 floors and 2 rooms on each floor. I'm not sure though if Barbie fits in it standing up but she can sit in it.

Camomila · 07/10/2020 18:24

I know! DS1 would like the barbie dream house for Christmas but it's soo expensive, luckily he would be just as happy with a playmobile house which is cheaper (but still expensive)

He wants a dolls house rather than wanting it barbie size

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 18:26

Remember the good old days when Blue Peter should show you how to make one with loo rolls and sticky back plastic?

Ifailed · 07/10/2020 18:28

They are only that expensive because people are daft enough to pay that price for them.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 07/10/2020 18:29

To stop people buying this unrealistic stereotype of a woman?

Too much?!Grin

Ineverdidmind · 07/10/2020 18:30

Have a look at the Barbie Malibu house. I think we paid about £70 last Christmas for one and it's massive, DD plays with it a lot.

emsmum79 · 07/10/2020 18:46

Kidkraft houses are better quality and a good range of prices

Spied · 07/10/2020 18:48

Studio do a great one with lights and all that jazz that is far superior and about £70 I think.
Can't find link.

Peta11 · 07/10/2020 18:50

Kidkraft wooden dolls houses are perfect for Barbie , one of our is almost 9 years old and is still going strong.
Different sizes and prices to suit space and budget .

Spied · 07/10/2020 18:50

Studio catalogue
'Personalised Fantasy Dolls House'

theboardgame · 07/10/2020 19:30

Does it have to be brand new? You can find really nice looking second hand houses for the fraction of the price.

Grin That is actually quite funny.

Op, Other than somebody sitting back rubbing their hands as they know many parents will feel the pressure to rumble up the cash so Santa can get the credit. There is no real reason why certain toys are the price they are.

WankPuffins · 07/10/2020 19:51

I’ve have a look at the wooden ones - They are so much more substantial than the barbie houses. There is nothing to them for such a high price!

@YellowandGreenToBeSeen I’ve always hated barbie - but Dd was bought one of the new ones for her birthday. They have changed the body shape and now they look like actual women, I was quite impressed.

My daughter wants a big doll house, after reading way too many reviews and price comparisons this is what I’ve gone for

@Camomila
I'm so glad that your son plays with barbies too, lots of people have passed judgement over letting mine play with themHmm

Camomila · 07/10/2020 20:00

imissthesouth He got into the barbie dream house cartoon on netflix recently (as nothing scary happens) so DM and I washed up my old barbies for him :)

whatever1980 · 07/10/2020 20:01

Amazon prime day soon so may get it cheaper or be able to pay interest free instalments but yes it is an incredible amount of money for a bit of plastic.

The wooden cheaper ones are a lot better.

I got the LOL winter chalet for my daughters last year and they have no concept of how much it cost and I won't be spending anything like that this year (got it in sale but still expensive).

WankPuffins · 07/10/2020 20:08

@gggrrrargh that’s fab!

£200?!

OP, I know this is a boring old 'good old days' post, but my DSis and I wanted a Barbie house. We used to go and swoon over it in the toy shop - it was on a special display at the top of the escalator.

Needless to say, our cruel and unloving parents said no, as they were probably the 80s equivalent of £200.

So DSis and I made the most brilliant Barbie house ever out of an old bookcase. We then added "extensions", which were made of cardboard boxes. Occasionally, the Barbies would be subject to a terrorist attack (we were ahead of our time), and we would smash it all up and then rebuild it (while tending to the Barbies in a makeshift hospital on the window-sill. Mushed up All-Bran makes very good fake sick for Barbie patients, we discovered. And lots of wet tissues wrapped around limbs do harden to become plaster-casts, though some poor Barbies had to have bits amputated).

Happy days.

Though I suppose the crucial thing was having a sister to invent stuff with. I'm not sure how I'd have spent my time if I hadn't had her.

AfterSchoolWorry · 07/10/2020 20:12

Mad, we have one that was played with about 3 times, it was the guts of €400 including all the dolls and horses etc

🙄

ZaZathecat · 07/10/2020 20:15

Because the plastic it's made of contains pixie dust.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 07/10/2020 20:19

Because they are all in the South East
