What are your recurring dreams?

I have two regular themes that come up -

  • I'm at home (in the family home I grew up in, not my current family home) and there's hundreds of unwanted guests. As I manage to get one room clear I go into another room and there's just so many more. It's a real stress and anxiety and I can't get anyone to leave.

  • I'm drink driving, usually really struggling to control the vehicle and then being caught and so full of guilt and shame.

Both dreams seem to have the themes of alcohol and being out of control. Whenever I have either dream I wake up SO relieved they're not true.
I've also had a similar one, though not as frequent, that I'm drunk and cheat on DH. Again, a very stressful and anxiety causing situation and again, so grateful when I wake up and know its not true.

I am a bit of a control freak in real life and all these have a theme of being out of control - although I don't necessarily notice these anxieties in my waking life.

They're also all linked to alcohol - I have had a bad relationship with binge drinking in the past, although not for a long time now.

What are your recurring dreams/themes and where do you think they stem from?

My newest recurring dream is that my 14 year old son is driving the car and I'm in the back seat. I've told him to drive, he's actually quite good at it but I suddenly realise it's illegal and struggle to get from the back into the front to take over driving. Super stressful.

Other dreams are
Retaking A levels. I never understand why I'm retaking them because I did well first time.
Packing at the end of a holiday and panicking because we're late.
Public toilets with tiny doors.

This is so interesting - reading some of these I realise I have some of them too although less frequently.

The plane one
The packing one

When I was in a job I hated and it was extremely stressful I would dream about realising I had gone on a trip and had not allowed enough time to get back for work on a Monday - probably wishful thinking!

Realising I’ve got a gcse (normally maths) very soon and had forgotten to study

I’d forgotten this one - I get them every year in the summer term :(

I've read all of these, they're fascinating.
All seem to follow the out of control, unable to gain control theme, which is reassuring to know that we're all probably very similar at our core!
Many flight/plane dreams - which sound terrifying to be honest!
And the sludge in mouth and chewing gum in throat ones sound awful too!

I'd forgotten until I read it, but I used to have the teeth crumbling and falling out one too, it's only now its occurred to me I've not had that in years. But that'd be so realistic and the vivid sensation of broken teeth in my mouth was so real and disturbing at the time!

I also have the one where I'm trying to type something and keep hitting the wrong letters and numbers. It goes on and on!

I also very regularly dream I'm back at school and about to take exams which I haven't revised for, or submit coursework when I've been skiving off the lessons all year, or give in homework which I haven't done.
I was a good student and never had these dreams when I was actually at school.

Also used to have a recurring dream where my eye sight went very blurry, usually when I was driving.

I wonder if mental health professionals such as psychiatrists and clinical psychologists place any great significance in our dreams? I know dreaming per se is essential for general health but I'd like to know if there is any genuine importance in the nature and themes.

@WildRosie
I'd love to know that, particularly as I seem to experience (remember) more bad dreams than good. Has anyone ever dreamt something that has then come true?

I dreamt I was pregnant the week before I had a positive test (which was only the day my period was due so no physical symptoms at that point). Yes we had been actively trying but none of the previous unsuccessful months had I dreamt I was. I just KNEW.

I have two, neither pleasant.

One is that I'm about to be engulfed by a tsunami. The settings vary but it always ends with me standing there waiting to be hit. I never get hit however as I always wake with a start at that point.

My other is that I'm on an aeroplane. We're going to New York. The plane taxis down the runway endlessly but we never take off.

Anyone who fancies themselves as a bit of a dream interpreter I'd be really interested to see what your take on these are!!

Playing the guitar or ukulele is another of my regulars. In the dream I'm quite good but in reality I can play neither. I've been learning the piano for over two years but that never features at night! Funny business.

I get the exam one too, usually Geography A level. I left school more than thirty years ago!

Dad died earlier this year and Mum more than six years ago. They too crop up frequently.

IME, no, none at all.

Some psychologists might, I guess, but not any I've worked with.

I feel as if I'm living two lives sometimes! Most of my dreams are of people from years ago and much better experiences than they were in reality.

Do psychologists really not give them any credence La?

I haven't had it for a while now but a few years ago I had regular dreams about being stuck in a tube station and now matter how fast I ran up the escalator or how long I ran for I could never get to the top and would always end up back on the platform. It was bizarre! I could never remember anything else happening, just endlessly trying to get to the ticket hall Confused

Trying to go somewhere, it's taking ages and the route is tortuous; I ask for directions along the way. I always wake up before reaching the destination.

Certainly no psychiatrists/psychologists that I've worked with in the NHS would have.

Psychotherapists might, I suppose.

PS
Obviously I'm interested, otherwise I wouldn't be reading this thread, but I'm afraid that's self-interest: wondering if other people's dreams are the same as mine and so forth.

I can think of 4 reoccurring dreams from different times in my life.
1.When I was a teenager I dreamt twice of a dead baby in the bath. This dream haunts me to this day.
2.Up to date recently is my work dream which was pretty much all I was dreaming about at 1 point. I'd be lost at work trying to find a new clients house. I'd try to use my phone but I'd be putting all the numbers in wrong and getting really stressed with it.
3.During my recent pregnancy I kept dreaming that I had been smoking (gave up in real life).
4.And my new dream theme is that I am stuck somewhere high up and can't get down, there's usually a broken ladder or something.

I have recently been having lots of dreams about dh being an arsehole to me, telling me he doesn't love me anymore and that he wants to leave me etc.

I also have regular dreams about being in a classroom and the children are misbehaving. I keep trying to shout above their noise but my voice doesn't work. I end up hitting and swearing at them.

I have a recurring dream that I'm trying to pack and trying to get somewhere. Usually on a train. I have hundreds of bags and loads of stuff and it's all very stressful and disorganised.

Trying to climb up or down something very high and very precarious...scaffolding made from steel poles on a rainy night. Or a very high staircase that has half given way and fallen down.

Sometimes the dream starts when I'm already half way up/down. Sometimes it begins when I'm about to start, and I know it's a bad idea, and I'm petrified, but I still start climbing anyway. Hate those dreams!
