Baby doesn't use bibs - is that odd?

My baby wasn't a dribbler or a puker and so we never used bibs until she was old enough to feed herself. Is that unusual?

We had to use a bib for our first as she was very sicky after milk, and then so dribbly when teething. We went through at least 5 a day. Our second very rarely wore a bib and we only have two left just in case she is teething badly, but will most likely throw them soon.

GaryWilmottsTeeth · 06/10/2020 13:30

DD hardly ever had a bib, DS was (and still is) a big drooly thumb-sucker. If I could put him in a bib now, it would save me having to wash so many school jumpers, as he wipes his chin on his sleeve. Nice.

Wondering if bibs are a good gift for newborns!

Ah!
I dont think they can hurt. DS was not a sicky baby at all but once he started teething... lord above.

Siennabear · 06/10/2020 16:20

My first was sick all the time up till around 6 months old. My 2nd , no sick or dribble at all. Very tidy baby. They’re all different 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bikingbear · 06/10/2020 16:30

Never really used them here until we hit spaghetti bolognese!

But it amazes me the amount we were given as gifts. Hindsight I'd have returned more than I did.

Caspianberg · 06/10/2020 17:00

Mine hasn’t so far. We have been gifted a whole pile. He just doesn’t really puke or dribble. Just started using now with weaning so I’m sure they will get used

TheChosenTwo · 06/10/2020 17:41

Never bothered with dc3 at all.
Just changed him if he made himself filthy with food. He wasn’t a sicky baby or a massive dribbler. The first 2 were so I used them lots with them.

WankPuffins · 06/10/2020 17:45

There aren’t enough muslin cloths in the world for my six
Week old. Never known such a messy milk drinker Grin

All three of mine have had to have bibs and I still had to change their clothes three times a day as they still got so wet!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 06/10/2020 17:50

Neither of mine needed a bib until they were weaning. (And then they needed the long sleeved full coverage type Grin). Both times I was pregnant people bought me what seemed like hundreds of them claiming I would need them. Most got given away still unworn. One well meaning relative seemed almost angry that I didn't put a bib on them when I was breastfeeding (she didn't have any of her own children so only had experience of bottle feeding, and that was done on a GF type schedule whether baby wanted it or not so seemed to include a lot of spit up). Trying to breastfeed with a bib was just weird. It was never anywhere other than in the way Grin

olderthanyouthink · 06/10/2020 18:38

I remember people gifting us bibs and thinking "what's the point of this?" Too small to stop the little Britain puke or provide decent coverage while weaning. I mentioned that we never used them to a FF mum and she snapped them up!

The big sleeved weaning bibs were rejected after about 12 months too so babies and bibs aren't really a thing in my head like they used to be.

olderthanyouthink · 06/10/2020 18:44

@rainydayslover I can get tomato out by washing the stuff with/ like the cloth nappies. 40-60° with Ariel and supermarket stain remover, one short (60min) wash and then a long (2hr) wash and the washing machine properly loaded. If I wasn't nappy washing I'd just do the long wash and it would come out eventually. The sun will also bleach out the stains but, well, it's in short supply atm.

Between DP (favourite tops are light but he's so clumsy) and DD (hugs her dad while eating!) I've had lots of practice

rainydayslover · 06/10/2020 18:53

@olderthanyouthink thank you so much for the tip, I'll get hold of it when I do my next supermarket shop. Would it help with old stains too?

olderthanyouthink · 06/10/2020 18:56

@rainydayslover I think so, I got coffee and blood out of DPs pillow cover and those stains happened over 3 years ago. He said he had tried to get them out before, one go round with the nappies and it was gone

rainydayslover · 06/10/2020 19:11

@olderthanyouthink thank you so much I'll try it. It's really sad as I have so many clothes that I could give to the baby bank as DS has outgrown them but I can't give it with stains like that. I'm due to go for a supermarket shop and I'll definitely will get it and try it. Thank you again!!

olderthanyouthink · 06/10/2020 19:20

Good luck! I've seen some of her old clothes with sticks from sick on them from before I get better at washing, hopefully I can get them white when there's another baby.

Btw used the full amount of detergent for the water hardness and heavy soiling I think, the clean cloth nappies Facebook group and website is very good for washing instructions

DappledThings · 06/10/2020 19:46

@Snog

Ok so it sounds as though maybe 50% of babies don't use bibs?
In my experience of 2 DC, then yes! DC1 dribbled loads, for a long time actually. GP reckoned he had overly large tonsils for a bit but the rest of him eventually got bigger around them.

DC2 never did or spat up so nevernwore dribble bibs, just the apron type ones once eating.
