What do you put in packed lunches?

Dc are 7 and 9. Normally have school dinners but since school have been charging £2.40 for a sandwich, fruit and crisps we have moved to packed lunches.

Today dc have a cheese sandwich, cut up carrots, Apple and crisps. Similar to the lunches the school are doing. My 9 year old says "everyone" in his class has at least one chocolate biscuit as well as crisps and some of them have 2 chocolate biscuits. I expect he is exaggerating but I just wanted to check I wasn't being mean by not giving him a chocolate biscuit in his lunchbox. I'm going to make some flapjack later so he can have some of that in his lunch tomorrow.

and I agree with @Whiskyinajar about the stress of what is in packed lunches.

My eldest son has issues with food and the school banging on about good food, bad food, treats, limiting/cutting out certain food, what is in the lunch box (no you can't have those crisps today) hasn't helped him in the slightest. I'm just grateful he eats something.

DS 13 has a packed lunch once a week, he has special needs and likes the meals in school but not the Wednesday menu!!! He takes ham sandwiches, crisps, a box of cut-up peppers, cucumber and carrot, and a yoghurt.
DD 15 takes lunch every day, she has a food flask and often takes leftovers of soup/pasta/stew in the winter. Today she has a tub of mixed salad (rice, sweetcorn, tomato, cucumber, peppers, cheese and ham). Sometimes she will take a sandwich or a pasta salad - always takes some fruit and nuts too and usually a small chocolate biscuit. (she is super sporty and skinny).

My just 9 year old will have a ham/tuna/chicken/cheese thin, some cucumber sticks/cherry tomatoes, a frube type yoghurt or a babybel, a mini malt loaf and a satsuma. On a Friday she has a chocolate biscuit bar instead of the malt loaf. She generally eats it all, sometimes the babybel gets left and she knows she has to eat the thin, salad and fruit first. I have wondered if it's too much but the thins are a lot smaller than a full sized sandwich would be and she virtually always eats it all.

Mine has a sandwich, drink and a biscuit/crisps or popcorn.

She likes cheese, little sausages etc, but won't take them to school as people say they smell.

I tried to put a plum in the other day, but apparently she'll get laughed at!

My DD (10) has:

  • a small sandwich
  • cucumber/tomatoes/carrots/red pepper
  • either yoghurt or a piece of cheese
  • fruit for break time and a different fruit for lunch
  • Quavers or breadsticks or rice cakes
  • a treat (usually a Club biscuit or a 2 finger kitkat or a jelly)

I almost always put a treat in.

I discovered she will eat lots of tiny portions but rarely eats a lot of one thing, if I give her a whole pack of crisps she often brings half home. So I'm afraid i do also split crisp packets across 2 lunches).

My DS has school dinners but at our school chocolate/chocolate biscuits are banned and crisps discouraged. I think plain biscuits/cakes are ok though.
