Day trip from Norwich - which seaside resort ?

shinynewapple2020 · 05/10/2020 18:15

Currently spending a few days staying in Norwich and plan a trip to the coast . Can anyone who is familiar with the area recommend which seaside resort would be best for us ?

We like a walk among the sea front , some nice 'interesting' / quirky / independent shops and somewhere for a nice lunch - Gastro pub or seafood restaurant .

It's just me and DH .

Also, I suppose , we would want to think of ease of travel , where is easiest to get to, has best roads etc .

I am guessing Great Yarmouth probably doesn't fit my description but may be easiest to get to ? What is Cromer like ? Southwold ? Lowestoft ?

Cromer is lovely, ticks all your boxes. Rocket House cafe on the beach v good if open. Close to Norwich, easy to drive, also buses and trains.
Southwold is gorgeous, also ticks all your boxes but is a long way from anywhere, especially Norwich!

Winegumaddict · 05/10/2020 18:19

Southwold is lovely and would fit your list of wants. All the roads out to coast are small country roads really but they're fine.

Fuzzywuzzyface · 05/10/2020 18:50

I would second cromer and overstrand, lovely beaches and walks.

rslsys · 05/10/2020 20:13

For God's sake - don't go to Gt. Yarmouth. COVID levels through the roof!
You could do Holt as well from Cromer. Not the seaside but loads of independent shops.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 05/10/2020 20:15

Blakeney?

redeyetonowheregood · 05/10/2020 20:42

Start in Holt for a coffee / lunch and a wander, back via Sheringham or Cromer. Overstrand / sea palling. Such a beautiful coast you are spoiled for choice

Really @rslsys ? I put Norwich and then various areas of Norfolk into Covid checker before we came and it all looked very low.

still, it now looks as if any data I looked at was incorrect anyway Sad

I live in Gorleston next to Great Yarmouth and our numbers of Covid cases are shooting up!

Gorleston has a lovely seafront but no quirky shops, I'd go to Holt

rslsys · 05/10/2020 20:48

Yep, afraid so - BBC Look East this evening. Lot of migrant workers in Gt. Yarmouth who work for Bernard Matthews which has just had an outbreak at it's Houlton site.
Recently had an outbreak in Attleborough at Banham Poultry. That one should be over now but a lot of their staff live in Gt. Yarmouth too.
Norwich & North Norfolk Coast will be fine!

Millie2013 · 05/10/2020 20:52

Yes to Cromer (with chips on the pier), or Wells, via Holt.
We love the beach at Gorleston, but agree, there’s a lack of quirky shops

JamesAnderson · 05/10/2020 21:00

I think it's low compared to the north west/east but it's high compared to the rest of Norfolk.

I mean the outbreak at banham poultry put the cases per 100,000 in the district i live in in the teens rather than single figures.

Sally2791 · 05/10/2020 21:03

Southwold as first choice by far, then Cromer.
Never Yarmouth

Hokeywokey · 05/10/2020 21:05

Sheringham

MotherWol · 05/10/2020 21:07

Cromer or Wells-next-the-Sea both have nice seafronts, quirky shops and good food

MegBusset · 05/10/2020 21:08

Southwold is nice but takes forever to get to. I'd go for Cromer every time. Lunch at the Rocket House or No.1 for fish and chips.

TheRealJeanLouise · 05/10/2020 21:13

Wells-next-the-sea every single time. Quirky shops, amazing food choices, limited amount of amusements. Take the little train down to the beach and back again.

Sewrainbow · 05/10/2020 21:53

Cromer would be my choice in your requirements. Sheringham & Wells nice too.

Holt is good for independent shops etc, Holkam has a good beach, dont know if the hall is open at the moment, I haven't been but am told its nice.

Yarmouth cheap, tacky, trashy seaside resort, fine if you like that stuff, I lived in Norfolk 5 years and dh has a relative there and yet you can count on the fingers of one hand how often I've been!

Damnloginpopup · 05/10/2020 22:42

I'd do Sheringham and Cromer one day, in that order. Lowestoft and Southwold another. If the weather is nice you could book and visit Dunwich Heath NT site too, it is looking nice right now.

Gilead · 05/10/2020 23:10

Why the hell would anyone want to go to Lowie? Southwold, beautiful, with a trip over the estuary to Walberswick. Or Cromer and West Runton. Agree with No.1 for fish and chips.

Damnloginpopup · 05/10/2020 23:35

It's got great beaches (my main pleasure) and a long prom. Some good food, some eclectic shops. South pier to Kessingland is a lovely walk as is Links Road to Corton. I've lived here since 98 and enjoy the good parts of it (I work on 'the dark side' as it were so I'm aware of all sides.) thing is, I find Southwold overrated personally but everyone else seems to love it whereas I find it merely ok (the sail loft is frwat for food though as is the seafood place on the harbour) Beccles is OK, Bungay is nice.

bloodywhitecat · 05/10/2020 23:46

I don't think Lowestoft fits the shops brief does it? Southwold and Holt do.

Damnloginpopup · 06/10/2020 00:44

Not massively but there's a few down London Road south worth a look

DinosApple · 06/10/2020 06:52

Cromer or Wells (bit of a walk to the beach). I love Wells personally.

Southwold is lovely, but it's a long way from Norwich compared to the above. Norfolk has some beautiful beaches and towns, you don't need to go far to find them.

DamitJanet · 06/10/2020 06:52

Sheringham or Wells if you want shops as well as beach.
For prettier and quieter beaches Waxham or anywhere near the Burnhams, Brancaster etc.

mogtheexcellent · 06/10/2020 11:58

Cromer or sheringham. Yes the rocket house cafe in Cromer is open. Most places are open.
