Anyone else just want the veg and gravy?

I’m not a vegetarian but eat meat very rarely. I love a Sunday roast ..just without the meat! But MIL and others often tell me I can’t just have that. I think they think it’s a reflection on their hosting skills if I sit there without a main dish. But it’s my favourite meal!

Also, if you buy me a vege “ main”...it’s still just vegetables!

I only bring this up now cos we are having a delayed Sunday roast tonight and it got me thinking, but I was wondering if any vegetarians have the same problem?

Me!

I cook a roast most weekends in the autumn/winter but I rarely eat the meat unless its a shin of beef. We have had chicken the last few weeks and I never touch it, but I eat meat most days.

I normally have
Mash
Roast potatoes
Roast carrots and parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Tenderstem broccoli
Spring greens/Sprouts
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy

That's enough for me!

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2020 17:48

That sounds lovely. You see I think that’s a complete meal!

My favourite part of a roast is the veg and gravy I often don't touch my meat!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 05/10/2020 17:57

Sounds lovely I like all the veg and stuffing, not so much the meat.
I'd rather extra roasties and veg myself.

vanillandhoney · 05/10/2020 17:57

Me!

I normally have roasties, Yorkshire puddings, veg and loads of gravy.

grafittiartist · 05/10/2020 17:59

Me too.
I am veggie, and at a carvery will happily eat a huge plate of veg.

ScrapThatThen · 05/10/2020 18:03

Yes especially with cauliflower cheese and a Yorkshire.

TroysMammy · 05/10/2020 18:05

I had a smoked tofu stir fry the other day (I'm not vegetarian) and I said to my partner that I could easily eat a stir fry with just vegetables.

I love veg and gravy so yes I could easily forego the meat but would have to have a Yorkshire pudding though.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 05/10/2020 18:06

Me!! The gravy, veg, stuffing balls, apple sauce - that's the best bits!!!

I suppose the issue they see is lack of protein. A veggie main will generally have some form of protein in it.

That said, you don't need to balance all meals to have a balanced diet so absolutely nothing wrong with a plate of veg and gravy. Although unless the gravy is veggie, it's not a vegetarian meal.

I'm veggie but I would find just vegetables a bit boring unless they are "fancy" versions. So things like a gratin, cauliflower cheese etc get a thumbs up for a "treat" meal, steamed broccoli and steamed carrots are fine for an occasional meal if nothing else is available.
MrsGrindah · 05/10/2020 18:08

Yes I need a Yorkshire pudding and as I’m not veggie I’m happy to have the gravy made with meat stock. But nobody believes me that I’m not “ going without” . This means MIL has served me some odd meals throughout the years ... deep fried Brie with veg and gravy anyone?!

I think it sounds yummy but Id want to give you extra veg. I don’t know why, just seems like I haven’t been generous otherwise Blush

MimiSunshine · 05/10/2020 18:12

Me too. I’d also happily have a curry without the meat. Doesn’t need to be made as a vegetarian meal but I just find it’s plenty filling if you have the pakoras / onion bhaji / naan / aloo paneer sides etc as well abd the sauce is the best bit

OchonAgusOchonO · 05/10/2020 18:15

@MrsGrindah - deep fried Brie with veg and gravy anyone?!

Boak!!!

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2020 18:16

My thoughts exactly!

A veggie carvery is one of my favourite meals , Yorkshire , stuffing , roasties , mash , loads of veg , veggie gravy and cauliflower cheese . I also like cranberry sauce with it .

Squirrelblanket · 05/10/2020 18:20

I'm not vegetarian but when I make a Sunday dinner I'll only put a token piece of meat on my plate but loads of all the other stuff. The veg, roasties and Yorkshires with gravy are the best bits!

Also like another poster, I've found I often prefer a veggie curry these days. Either mushroom or paneer. ❤️

Bvop · 05/10/2020 18:20

Quorn roast. Tastes good and keeps meat eaters happy that vegetarians are getting their protein.

Hobbes8 · 05/10/2020 18:24

I’m not veggie but I feel a bit like that about Christmas dinner - a bit meh about the turkey or whatever but love all the sides.

Although now I think about it that has to include pigs n blankets.

OchonAgusOchonO · 05/10/2020 18:33

I hate quorn and any of the other processed fake meats. I'd much prefer just veg.

Taswama · 05/10/2020 18:41

Yes I agree with you. I'm not a veggie either but I love it when a pub does a veggie option to go with all the roast sides. Definitely better than a mushroom and feta filo parcel or whatever the veggie main is.

Comefromaway · 05/10/2020 18:43

My son often has a huge Yorkshire pudding with a roast potato, loads of veg & gravy. No meat. It’s his favourite meal of the week.

Sheknowsaboutme · 05/10/2020 19:14

Fuck the veg. Who eats it?

Just give me the yorkies and the gravy jug🐷
