Nursery illnesses SERIOUSLY

So my daughter started nursery last September and as expected had a cough and cold the entire of winter. The cough has lingered ever since, took her to the beach 8th August she caught a cold, started back at nursery first week of September and still had a bloody cough and cold! Is this normal second year at nursery? I heard it gets better after the first winter but its friggin worse!
Shes on inhalers, been for blood tests (slight anaemia), we have allergy testing Saturday due to the lingering cough & as of yet nothing helps. Anyone elses babys still getting constant illnesses? Shes 3.5.

Is she still anaemic?

Ensure she get her iron level up and takes daily vitamins as advised by the NHS - www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/vitamins-for-children/

If she is nutrient deficient then it won't help her immune system.

It’s normal for September in my experience, maybe unusual to be all year round. One of my two had constant illness until the turned 2.5 the other child was fine - hardly gets anything (Beyond the obligatory Late August / September colds).

Sounds like you need to boost her immunity. Loads of vitamins in the form of colourful food, vitamin supplements, plenty of outdoor play in all weathers (properly dressed) and plenty of sleep.

Otherthinkingmommy · 05/10/2020 09:01

@RedMarauder only just been diagnosed as anaemic, no advise was given was just told to grow out of it. Shes just started elderberry syrup. Thanks for the link!

@Twickerhun yeah the cough all year round definitely isn't normal hopefully we find out more at her allergy testing and shes been referred to paediatric respiratory.

@Smallsteps88 thank you, I do all of those to no avail! Thanks for the advice though

My daughter (who is 12 now) still always gets a stinking cold about a week or two into autumn term. Perfectly healthy otherwise. However, speaking from personal experience, anaemia can hugely increase your risk of getting and then being really ill from colds and flu. Get on top of that as a priority, it’s so simple to fix but was literally life changing for me.

Otherthinkingmommy · 05/10/2020 09:09

@Ohdeariedear yeah think your right I need to get the anaemia under control. I'll speak to a doctor and see what he suggests. Her cells that fight infection were fine but i dont think they took into consideration her anaemia. Thanks x

My 6 year old has constant coughs/colds random viruses, most children in his class have snotty noses most of the time. They just keep passing things around the class.

DC were at nursery from 4 months and caught or brought home everything under the sun in the first year but both seemed to grow out of it after about a year. As a child I suffered terribly with coughs, was on amoxicillin at least every other month for 10 year - it was never investigated and only stopped after suffering badly with glandular fever as a teen.

The anemia obviously needs looking into as well as treating in case there's an underlying reason for it. If DD isn't already taking Vit D supplements I would recommend you start her on them ASAP - a Dr very recently told me that everyone should just take them everyday, all year round for life.

RedMarauder · 05/10/2020 09:26

was just told to grow out of it.

In the future if any health workers says anyone in your family is deficient in any vitamin and/or mineral ask them for advice on how to get the levels up and don't accept bullshit like that.

Cough could come from dust or mould (sorry not to insult you, our bathroom window has black mould and I’m constantly battling it) making her cough, especially as more people are putting the heating on now. Could be worth changing pillows and duvets and getting your windows open as much as possible, if not doing already. Or on the other end of the spectrum, it could be cleaning products irritating her throat? Just can’t win sometimes. Good luck, hope you get to the bottom of it.

Doingmybest4u · 05/10/2020 09:48

I feel for you. My DD started nursery at 1 and was constantly poorly for the first 9 months. Nursery said this was really unusual. She only went on about 2/3 of days that year which caused chaos with two working parents and little support. Having said that, after the first year it got better. She gets a lot of mild colds and then 2 sickness bugs a year on average but that’s it. I think lockdown has meant they are getting more now -
We’ve been back 4 weeks and are on the second cold.

kateybeth79 · 05/10/2020 12:25

I have a 6 and an 8 year old and they tend to get about 2 colds a year that last for a few days. Even when they were at nursery they didn't get colds very often, which I was surprised about.

BikeTyson · 05/10/2020 12:27

If she’s anaemic and on inhalers that sounds like more than just the usual nursery illnesses. Think we’ve been lucky with DD who must have an iron clad immune system, she’s only missed 2 days of nursery in 2 years after starting at 11 months.

Muddypuddlesinthewoods · 05/10/2020 12:46

My dc was diagnosed with anemia when aged 4. Had been ill with bad chests etc since a few weeks old. Dc was eventually diagnosed with asthma and coeliac disease. When both were under control he stopped getting ill all the time. Worth investigating why the anemia if dc has a healthy diet etc.
