High Wycombe

Hi All,

My girl is in year 4, and we are considering a move to either Aylesbury or High Wycombe; as I understand both the girls schools good. Could anyone please be kind enough to suggest which of the areas is better for moving in?

We are looking to buy a property in region of £425k. Could you please accordingly suggest areas for High Wycombe or Aylesbury.

Thank you

High Wycombe is an absolute dump, i wouldn't consider it.Wycombe High is a good school but I'd consider Marlow/Frieth and maybe Borlase as a school instead.

InfertilitySukks · 04/10/2020 21:36

OP ask MN to move this over to the Primary Education section.

As like everywhere else in the UK, both these towns have good and not-so-good parts of both towns so these need to be narrowed down and prioritised somehow.

Aylesbury is extending massively and merging into Stoke Mandeville, Aston Clinton etc.
High Wycombe DID once have the reputation for having a crime rate higher than Slough but no longer does.

They both have villages, both have rural areas and easy access to motorways, both have good schools depending on what’s required....

Priorities really need to be assessed. Soon someone will be along to mention Wendover, Thame & Risborough and that throws even more spanners in the works.

There's a grammar school system in Bucks, so unless your dd passes the 11+ exam in Y6 then she won't be able to go to the girls school in either town. A plan B is definitely needed for that scenario.

Yep. You would only get in to the girls school at High Wycombe if she passes the 11+.

InfertilitySukks · 04/10/2020 21:50

.....a lot of girls pass because of the private tutoring that starts some time before the 11+ exams, which I was told now cost about £50 per hour - does this sound right?

Delatron · 04/10/2020 21:51

It’s about £40 per hour and wouldn’t guarantee a pass. They’d need to be of high ability also. So top set for maths, high reading level...

I've PM'd you @Covmum63 Smile

Covmum63 · 04/10/2020 22:46

I do realise my daughter has to clear the 11+ exams ..that’s a given 😊.
Any help with the good areas within the catchment of Wycombe High and Beaconsfield girls school would be very useful, as I’ve very little idea about the place.

Thanks again :-)

Beaconsfield is much nicer than hw. I wouldn't go near hw nor Aylesbury.

InfertilitySukks · 04/10/2020 22:58

For B’field at £450k you’ll need Loudwater, Woburn Green side.

tapdancingmum · 04/10/2020 23:00

High Wycombe as a whole isn't a dump - just certain parts of it! There are some lovely villages on the outskirts. Naphill, Lacey Green, Penn, Holmer Green and Hazlemere are nice areas. I may just live in one of these villages. Just be aware that if you do get into Wycombe High you will have to factor in cost for transport as Bucks will only pay for you to go to your nearest school.

Some Lacey Green children go Aylesbury way for the grammars as there are two - one just girls and one mixed.

Aylesbury has had a lot of new houses built (most of which have flooded today!) but, again, there are some nice villages on the outskirts.

Longwick is a nice area as is some parts of Princes Risborough and there are quite a few new builds going up.

If you need any more info you can pm me and I'll try to help as best I can 😀

@tapdancingmum thanks. Sent you a PM.

I would also consider what catchment area any property falls into for non-selective schooling. There are some well-regarded secondary schools in some of the areas mentioned by PP but do your homework.

Covmum63 · 06/10/2020 12:36

Hi all, thanks for your inputs. Could anyone give insights into how the area around The Rye and Wycombe Marsh are please?

Fressia123 · 06/10/2020 12:45

I lived in Aylesbury (and Beaconsfield). Aylesbury is awful and would never ever go back. We used to call it Lamesbury. I'd move to Amersham if Beaconsfield is out of your price range.

InfertilitySukks · 06/10/2020 14:21

The Rye & Wyc Marsh aren’t the best but they aren’t the worst either. They’re literally right on the A40 so traffic will be utterly hideous, you’re looking at sitting in the car for half an hr for every half mile if you need that particular main road in rush hour.

InfertilitySukks · 06/10/2020 14:23

Both walking distance of the centre of HW and have parches of green areas. The park at the Rye has been significantly upgraded.

underneaththeash · 06/10/2020 15:38

@Covmum63 they’re not good areas. Not particularly unsafe, just scruffy.
Which year group is your daughter in?

Limelemon · 14/11/2020 20:25

HW isn't dump as a whole only some areas to avoid like lower side of Desborough ave. You can look into Cressex or handy cross for Wycombe High, if you are also considering private then Pipers corner is a lovely girls school surrounded by lovely villages, e.g., great kingshill, hughenden, naphill,- coates lane, hughenden boulevard you can also consider which would be cheaper than these villages but still nice area with hughenden park.

Limelemon · 14/11/2020 20:36

Rye- London road can get really busy with traffic. But there is a new development in Rye which seemed quite nice.
