So do you have any ideas at all in your plans and how old are you now ?

Im early 40s but I’d like to do some real traveling
Actually go on a trio around the world

Maybe do some animal conservation work

Thjngs is still like to learn like scuba diving, skiing properly
Although maybe ought to learN these before retirement

I'm 53. Full retirement from virtually all paid work I imagine happening when I'm 75, I dunno potter, walk giant dogs on the beach, maybe I'll have some grandchildren to spend time with.
It's harder to get anything done when you're older -- takes longer so that will fill my time.

My dad is 78 & still not meant to be fully retired, but had to stop work due to covid, so probably won't work again. He is bored witless.

Tanfastic · 04/10/2020 09:32

Worked out I'll be able to retire when I'm about 58. I'm 47 now. We won't be rich but we'll be able to maintain pretty much the standard of living we do now. Husband will be 65 then but he's already semi retired now.

We both have hobbies and most of mine I never get time to do due to working full time and there's so many things I'd like to try too (mainly crafty stuff). I also love to bake. I'd also like to travel more. I definitely would not be bored!

MadMadMad · 04/10/2020 09:36

I am retired (just) - it was always our plan to retire at 55, whilst not well off we are comfortable and have a cushion of savings for the unexpected. We plan to travel (after Covid), indulge our hobbies which have been on the back burner whilst working full time and just spend time enjoying life. Having seen too many people die suddenly and far too young we want to make the most of our life together whilst we can.

CarnageAtTheGardenCentre · 04/10/2020 09:37

I’m 55 in January.

My private pension is due then, but I’m still working, three days a week, and reasonably fit and healthy so I’m going to leave it where it is and carry on working til 57, maybe 58. Thinking more 57 though 😁.

DelurkingAJ · 04/10/2020 09:38

Aiming for 62 (DH will be 60) and we think we’ll travel, spend some time together, volunteer and hopefully have DGC when we’re in our early 70s.

CarnageAtTheGardenCentre · 04/10/2020 09:40

....oh yes, we plan to get a dog when we retire too 🐕

Readandwalk · 04/10/2020 09:44

Travel, nationally and internationally . Take days hiking, publish more books, join writing groups. Gym, swim every day. Cook slowly.

I'm 50 and desperately want to retire at 55. I'll have a small pension then so will have to supplement it.

Pickypolly · 04/10/2020 09:45

55 all being well.
Need advice about it though.
Good pension but still not sure about it all.

CarnageAtTheGardenCentre · 04/10/2020 09:45

I forgot to put what I’d do when I retire...

Bake, sew (craft -y stuff) read, travel.

Dh and I plan to go to France for a month. Spend two weeks in the North then two weeks in the South. We need a decent car first though.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 04/10/2020 09:45

I have just retired age 62. Many years ago I assumed it would be 60, then my pension age changed to 66. I took a final salary pension at 60 and was also working part time, I gave up my part time job in April as I hated wfh so retired completely. DH is retiring at 60 which is what he always planned to do with final salary pension.

We were looking forward to travelling but will delay that for a couple of years now

AuntieMarys · 04/10/2020 09:47

I'm retired at 60. Dh will work for another 5 years.
I go to the gym, hike, meet friends, visit galleries and theatres/gigs. We have lots of nights away in this country.
Mortgage free.

Cleanmean · 04/10/2020 09:47

Would love to retire at 60 but can't see it happening as I've moved jobs during my career and pensions are all over the place. Really need to sit down and work out where they all are, how much there is in the pension pot and whether we can afford to retire. I hope I can retire at 60, I'd love to travel more, read, spend time with grandchildren and more time with hubby just the two of us.

Itwasaquarterpast11 · 04/10/2020 09:48

I have no idea how I would spend my time. My work and life are well balanced at the moment. I will not have more money if I retire to do the 'big' things, so am fitting those in while I still work. I have sufficient time to do everything I want so retirement does not seem very appealing. Plus, I have no intention of being used for childcare, so that would not be on the cards at all.

Valkadin · 04/10/2020 10:31

I retired at 50 but it was a set of circumstances not of my choosing. I do however get a decent pension, it was ill health grounds. DH will probably retire at 60 though I’m going to try and persuade him to retire earlier. He has plans to travel again, a word of warning is expect enormous premiums for travel insurance when you get to that age especially if you have to declare any health issues, I had to and it doubled the premium. He has a plan to sail round the Caribbean which I’m not keen on, I’m not keen on yachting due to seasickness. We are thinking of buying a canal boat and doing some traversing round UK waterways. He also wants to follow the English cricket team which I am more than happy to do as also love cricket.

MissCalamity · 04/10/2020 10:51

I'm hoping for 60, our mortgage will be paid when I'm 49 (DP is 11 years older than I am)
I can put more into my pension once the mortgage is paid, I'm currently in a good work place pension scheme and they pay 10%.

nosswith · 04/10/2020 10:51

I plan to retire at 65. There are two or perhaps specific volunteering opportunities I have considered, and also I plan on travelling to a few longer haul places. It's a while away though.

Meruem · 04/10/2020 10:57

I’ve always had the mindset that I would do all my “big” travelling pre retirement. For one thing, while it may be gloomy, no one is “guaranteed” that time. I’ve seen a few people die around retirement age. Also, you can’t know what your health will be like at that stage and whether you’d be able to manage big trips.

I’m 50 and have steadily cut my hours. I’d rather do another 25 years part time, than 15 years full time and then no job. My hours equate to roughly 3 days a week and that suits me. I earn enough to live on and save some. I have a good work life balance. I want to enjoy life now.

Recently my fit and healthy 72 yr old mum ended up in intensive care due to a bowel problem. She doesn’t drink or smoke, she eats healthily and exercises. You can do all the “right” things but old age does bring a greater risk of health issues.

So to answer your question, I guess I will mostly do what I do now. Maybe work a couple of days a week, spend the rest of my time doing my hobbies etc, maybe some travelling if I’m up to it.

homemadecommunistrussia · 04/10/2020 11:22

I would need to check the details of my pension, but I would imagine somewhere in my late seventies. My grandparents and one parent died before then, so I don't imagine I will get up to much.
I am surprised so many people are/are planning to retire at around 60!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/10/2020 11:40

I'll be working until state pension age, won't be able to afford to retire before then unless I come into a significant amount of money. I'm 30 so I'm anticipating working into my 70s.

GreekOddess · 04/10/2020 11:45

I don't think we will be able to retire until state retirement age (67/68) we are both 48. We plan to live by the sea in a beautiful spot of the country, travel, hopefully have grandchildren potter around and spend time together. I hope we are both healthy enough to do that! Ideally we would like to live long enough to have 20 years of retirement and see our grandchildren (if we are lucky enough to have some) reach adulthood.

BackforGood · 04/10/2020 11:47

When young, I assumed it would be at 60 - when women used to become OAPs.
After having dc, and working through and being exhausted for most of my 30s, I decided it would be 'when we had paid the mortgage off'.

When we got to that stage, I realised I actually MUCH prefer my paid work to stuff like housework, decorating an gardening to I stayed and we treated ourselves to a cleaner.

I can't see me working until 67 (when state pension will kick in), but I'm mid 50s now and can't see me 'being retired' any time soon either, even though I've got a list a mile long of things I'm going to do once I'm retired'.
Odd how it changes as it becomes more realistic and not some vague time in the future.

CaffeineInfusion · 04/10/2020 12:03

I suspect I'll be working till I die. But realistically, who's going to employ a generation of walking fossils?

Not everyone has a blue-chip company pension. Or even one at all. And I don't believe the state pension will exist in any useful form when I come of age.

I try not to think about it.

ChalkDinosaur · 04/10/2020 12:09

I expect to work part time until my 70s, potter around for a few years (if our robot overlords allow it) then step into the euthanasia booth with a sigh of relief.

Yellredder · 04/10/2020 12:13

Probably work til I'm about 70. I'm 51 now. My mum retired last year at 76.

user15412486546 · 04/10/2020 12:27

Short of a medical miracle, I will be dead before I get anywhere near retirement age.

So obviously I don't subscribe to the strange of idea of postponing all the fun things you want to do during your life off into a future time when you may be too dead/unwell to ever do any of them.

If you want to learn to ski or scuba dive or whatever else, why not do that now (pandemic issues aside)? Or take a career break while you're young and fit to travel?
