Anyone else find Slimming World annoying?

Hi peeps,
Anyone on Mumsnet who does Slimming World?
I've been doing it for about 2 years now and have lost around 5 stone 5lbs which is fantastic but my enthusiasm for it is starting to wane massively. I just find it really annoying now. All through lockdown I managed to only put on 1.5lbs which I think is an achievement considering I wanted to eat everything in sight over those 3 months due to anxiety and boredom. I tried to follow the sw diet as much as i could but now lockdown is over I ca't seem to get my head back in the game. I've also started putting weight on again. Put on 2.5 lbs in a month which has bloody irritated me as i've eaten relatively well, no takeaways, literally no alcohol, no biscuits, cakes, bread, crisps and I still managed to put on. I think the thing that has started to irritate me is the fact that you have all the 'healthy extras' which means if you have cereal for breakfast you then can't have any wholemeal bread for lunch as you have to "syn" it. And even then a slice of bread is about 7 syns. I mean, seriously?? It's all about cooking from scratch but, like many people, I don't have time to fanny about cooking every meal from scratch just so that I don't have any syns. I usually have rice cakes or ryvitas with something on for lunch but even they are synfull. I think i've just had enough of it to be honest but just wanted to hear if anyone else on here has any experiences of this. Would be good maybe for encouragement. Thanks!

Have you considered eating a balanced diet with lots of variety and just calorie count? The My Fitness Pal app is quite good for this Smile

Princessmumma30 · 03/10/2020 19:03

@Mummyoply I have heard about this app before so might try it. I think i've come to the end of my slimming world journey to be honest and it's time to try something else. I just t be able to keep the weight that ive lost off.

Firstly well done you've done amazing to lose 5st

I lost about a stone following the SW diet about 12 years ago. As a single person I found it easy to stick too. However other than the first couple of classes I never went to the classes and I wasn't paying a fiver to stand on someone else's scales.

Now feeding a family I find it impossible to stick to. The reason I stopped going to classes is I found it very false / patronising, who uses expressions like hearty and stick to your ribs, as then I was like Hmm at the whole faff of fat free chips OMG who could be bothered??

@Bikingbear thank you! I get where you're coming from. I have a husband and two kids and they never eat the same as me so preparing meals is always a massive task. Most of the time i end up eating a poxy jacket potato as that's all i can be bothered to cook after sorting everyone else out. Plus i completely get the patronising thing. The amount of times i get called "darlin" or "sweetheart" when at group. You are right though, sw is okay if you're single and you only have to think of yourself. I'm over constantly counting syns and depriving myself of things because i've used up all my syns on bloody ryvitas and butter. Wh the hell decided to give ryvitas syns???

I’m calorie counting using my fitness pal and have lost 24 lbs so far 😁

I Keep meals quite simple which works great for ease of preparation and also for counting the calories.

Then, you can have bread whenever you want and just count the calories.

lyralalala · 03/10/2020 19:57

I lost 8 stone with SW, but like you I find it impossible with a busy family. I also got fed up feeling like I was on a diet all the time.

I calorie count using a free app. I go through stages where I don't bother counting for a while, but go back to it if I feel I'm slipping too much into old habits.

Meal planning has really helped with keeping me on track, but sorting the family as if I know we're having a high calorie dinner I can tailor my lunch accordingly. Not having to make two meals every night has made a huge difference.

Viviennemary · 03/10/2020 20:03

I think it's the worst diet ever. Consultants sho don't know what they're talking about. But you've done well to lose all that weight. And it will be a shame to put it back on. Try calorie counting.

Princessmumma30 · 03/10/2020 20:42

@lyralalala @Viviennemary thank you guys. I too am getting tired of feeling like i am on a diet all the time and missing out. It's actually exhausting and sucks the life out of every day to be honest. I will defo try and calorie count as that sounds better. The only reason I still go to group is to get weighed as I don't trust my crappy scales! Think i need to invest in a good set of scales that are 100% accurate.

Try pinch of nom books and either my fitness pal app or nutracheck app. It's calorie counting and very simple. No need for all a and b things just a nice way of life

Viviennemary · 03/10/2020 21:00

Even if you say have 1500 calories a day through the week and 2000 at weekends I don't think you would put on weight. I need to lose weight but absolutely could never face SW again.

Incrediblytired · 03/10/2020 21:04

I’m on slimming world and literally don’t feel like I’m on a diet, but I’m not convinced there’s a lot of advice about maintaining weight with them. If you are at your target weight I can’t see the problem with cereal for breakfast and sandwich for lunch.

Pinstripes6 · 03/10/2020 21:22

Try looking up Team RH on Facebook. It will help you see SW for what it is

BabbleBee · 03/10/2020 21:24

I agree with @Pinstripes6

TeamRH and Rebelfit expose SW for what it really is - a business that counts on the programme failing so you return and spend more money.

lyralalala · 03/10/2020 21:25

I didn't bother with scales. I use the scales in Boots (well pre-Covid) once a fortnight when I collect prescriptions.

In my house the floors are off so badly you can lose or gain half a stone by moving room

chocolatespiders · 03/10/2020 21:30

Just to say what ever you decide I go to boots and pay to use the scales. Having scales in the house is dangerous for me.

Mummyoply · 03/10/2020 21:53

@Princessmumma30 is really easy to use, I like it because I can eat a wide variety of food and use the app to balance my macros, nutrients and calories each day. I never get bored and if I fancy a treat I save some calories or do a bit more exercise. Smile

Princessmumma30 · 03/10/2020 22:05

Thank you everyone. It seems that calorie counting is the way to go. Think I am going to stop sw. It'll be interesting to have a look at those sites that expose sw for what it really is. I can only imagine the amount of money i have spent at group each week for nearly two years just to be weighed!

And something else ive found that that helps is the not eating anything after your evening meal.

BabbleBee · 04/10/2020 20:21

I’ve just lost almost a stone without dieting. I calculated my TDEE (online sites do it for free), used MyFitnessPal to stay in calorie deficit every week and to ensure I was drinking 2L of water every day. I aimed for 10k steps every day but found that challenging over lockdown so aimed for 70k over the week which worked better for me. I did free online HIIT a couple of times a week. Didn’t cost me a penny.
