Seen in a central london park where there are lots of water birds and many unusual species, but unfortunately I am clueless and this one wasn’t on the picture board.

Can anyone tell me what kind of bird this is?

A herron. My absolute favourite. At least I think that's what it is.

Soubriquet · 03/10/2020 15:08

Looks like a heron with his neck right down

MajesticWhine · 03/10/2020 15:09

Oh I thought they had longer necks

They do! He's just got his hunched down like the u-bend in the kitchen sink.

SnugglySnerd · 03/10/2020 15:11

Yes definitely a heron. I love them - they look prehistoric when they fly!

alexdgr8 · 03/10/2020 15:12

looks like a heron, hunching down against the cold/rain probably.

PolarBearStrength · 03/10/2020 15:12

Definitely a heron all huddled up.

MajesticWhine · 03/10/2020 15:13

Ah thanks everyone

was it st james's park

Ffsseriously · 03/10/2020 15:31

Whatvi love about herons is that they nest up in trees, you would think they would have nests like swans but no up in a tree all together in a heronry.

MajesticWhine · 03/10/2020 15:40

No not St.James, a bit north. I don't really know why I'm being coy about it Grin

I do love herons. He's perched there, all still, waiting for a fish to come along, then he'll be under the water like a flash.

Soubriquet · 03/10/2020 15:44

We’ve got a heron who seems to like landing in the local field.

I’m sure it’s the same one. I don’t know why it seems to prefer the field when there is a perfectly good river not far across

I see one in a field too! There is also one that flies over our house in the same direction at more or less the same time every day and I assume the same one flies back later in the day. Are they very habitual creatures by any chance?
beachedwhales · 03/10/2020 16:29

yes, it's a grey heron.

fairydustandpixies · 03/10/2020 16:43

A heron or an egret???

ApolloandDaphne · 03/10/2020 17:57

Deffo a grey heron. We have lots of them around where I live.

PinkBuffalo · 03/10/2020 18:08
