Hidden nanny Cams. recommendations

Trying to make a long story short, my friend's mum is leaving alone, they are happy with this arrangement but due to her age they want to put a hidden camera in the house to make sure she is alright and also keep her indepence as much as she can as it seems to be really important for her. Do you have/use one you are happy with? They are looking for something not depending in a subscription but rather be able to be stored independently.

Surely they should tell the child about the camera?
What about other family members or friends that may visit?
Where would the camera be placed?

RedMarauder · 03/10/2020 13:04

So you want people to recommend you a camera so you can spy on an adult?

LittleMissLockdown · 03/10/2020 13:06

Is that actually legal? You want recommendations for a camera so your friends can install it into another adults house without their knowledge??

UsernameNotValid · 03/10/2020 13:06

Does your friends Mum have any conditions that make them worry about her living independently?

Unless the lady is happy with cameras watching her every move at home I really don't think this is appropriate.

You can get panic button systems installed reasonably if falls are a concern.

HyaluronicHippo · 03/10/2020 13:08

Will they be telling her?

Does she have any medical conditions that mean she has no capacity?

Guineapigbridge · 03/10/2020 13:08

Unethical.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/10/2020 13:08

Is this not elder-abuse?

Stompythedinosaur · 03/10/2020 13:09

You absolutely shouldn't spy on someone in their own home like this.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 03/10/2020 13:11

Hiding a camera in an adults home is against the law surely?

OneFiveFour · 03/10/2020 13:12

Unethical and, depnding on where it's positioned, illegal.

RedCatBlueCat · 03/10/2020 13:12

Absolutely no way.
Put in panic alarms, call in or phone frequently, but you absolutely cannot install a hidden camera in your parents house.

UnicornAndSparkles · 03/10/2020 13:13

This is an awful invasion of privacy and is probably illegal.

june2007 · 03/10/2020 13:13

If your friend has discussed this with her mum and mum says yes to it then fine if not then this is totally wrong.

OverTheRubicon · 03/10/2020 13:14

It's illegal. They need to have an open conversation, or involve medical professionals if she's truly unable to live alone.

Kb12 · 03/10/2020 13:16

Please do not let them do this.

022828MAN · 03/10/2020 13:17

Has she consented to this?
You'd also need to put a sign up for anyone entering the property that they are being recorded.

whiskyremorse · 03/10/2020 13:20

Have a look into the 'Just checking' system which tracks movement and doesn't take images so you'd know if she got up to go to the bathroom and didn't return to bed, for example. Or if the front door was left open. Much less intrusive than a camera.

Quaagars · 03/10/2020 13:21

Is there a reason you want to film this person, have you doubts?
Seems intrusive if you have no reason to

rosiethehen · 03/10/2020 13:23

Older people are adults. You can't treat them as though they're pets or small children.

Sara2000 · 03/10/2020 13:24
Hmm
EasternDailyStress · 03/10/2020 13:25

I don't think this is a nice thing to do.

Can you suggest that they get her some kind of wearable tech, so she can alert them if she needs them?

Just because she's old it doesn't mean she can be spied on. I would hate that.

Quaagars · 03/10/2020 13:25

Oh OK, just re-read - with your title "nanny cam" I thought you meant some carer for your mum you wanted to watch!
You mean put one in your mum's house without telling her?
No, that's awful.
If you don't think she can live independently and needs help, get her some.
Not spy on her!!

YerWanIsGettinNotions · 03/10/2020 13:25

Get an alexa device with a screen and one for your own home and connect them.

You say "alexa, drop in on mum" and it will chime in mum's house. She will get a one minute warning (to go and put some pants on if need be!) and you can chat, remind her of appointments, and if you place it somewhere you have a good view of kitchen/hall/stairs you will be able to see if she's fallen and can't get up or she can shout for help to you.

It's less of a sneaky presence but it's also helpful for reducing loneliness.

Ihaveoflate · 03/10/2020 13:26

Is this for real?

This is a gross invasion of privacy. Do people actually do this?

Billben · 03/10/2020 13:37

This is wrong on so many levels. I don’t see how any reasonable person could ever think this as okay. Ask your friend if she’d like to be secretly spied on. What on earth goes on in other people’s heads?
