Co-workers who put the knife in?

Just wondered what approaches people use to address co workers who subtly or not so subtly put the knife in, manipulate bosses etc?

Do you call them out on it, or discuss with boss with evidence?

In my example my colleague claimed I hadnt passed on a list of jobs, so she didn't complete them. Later I found the list and she had signed as received but 'lost'. She does various things like this and never admits responsibility/blames others or me.

I recently faced up a colleague who had lied to get me into trouble with boss. He wriggled, denied and made excuses. It was pretty satisfying and should make him think twice about doing it again.

I found out my old boss took total credit for all my work and slagged me off to others. Six months after she left the Director took me to one side and said that in recent months I’d really excelled. Funny that - my approach to work hadn’t changed! That was 4 years ago and I’m now the manager. I never said anything but a couple of more recent comments from Director suggest he has realised and I’m in my dream job moving towards being a director. I hate her type though and learned never to be like that as a manager. My team get credit for their work with me blowing their trumpets.

Personally, I call them out on it. Usually by showing proof. If necessary ccing anyone else who has been informed of the failing.

Now you know she can't be trusted, so use that knowledge - make a copy of the list she signed, save down emails, mention to your boss in front of her that you've handed over a task to her so she can't deny it later - whatever makes sense in your job.

Once you show you won't let her get away with it unchallenged, she might find someone else to scapegoat- make doing it to you more trouble that it's worth.

Thanks, good to hear all advice/experience. I'm going to mention to our boss I think, in a 121, I'll bring a copy of the signed list but not make too big a deal of it, just make her aware. No boss wants a big HR drama in my experience!

With colleague i think I'll also mention in 121. I dont like conflict, but I think she takes advantage of that. I'm pretty sure she puts the knife in more subtle ways as well.

Unfortunately, my boss was an even bigger bitch than my co-worker, and they had a real little love-in going between the pair of them. So ultimately, I was very happy to announce my departure - and to be fair, they were very likely to be even happier to hear that I was going!
