Whats happened to carrots

trivial i know but three batches if carrots from three different places at three different times over the last few weeks and all if them seem to have gone kinda , soft is the wrong word really, maybe bendy is the closest. You cant peel them properly as you cut chunks out but they aren't soft or squishy so you cant justify throwing them out

Anyone else had this issue.

Kept in fridge , one left in plastic onei out in a dish the last batch is in a mesh bag .

Sane problem each time

Wrong season probably. I expect they are the very last of the previous season's carrots and the new season's ones are only just starting to be ready to harvest.

You can get round the problem by cutting the tops and bottoms off the bendy ones and leaving them in a bowl of cold water for a couple of hours before peeling them. They stiffen up nicely - a drink of water works with flabby broccoli too.

wowfudge · 02/10/2020 14:06

We had some carrots go bendy recently too. I thought maybe they were old, but they usually last for ages in the fridge - never had them go bendy before!

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:07

Aah thanks fir the water tip I shall do that when I use them.

I've never had it befre either

They're just old. Shouldn't be though, given its root veg season. Our local Tesco has beautiful carrots in at the moment. Tastes as good as the ones we grew in the garden.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 02/10/2020 14:12

😆 at "flabby broccoli"

The last lot of carrots I bought didn't last as long as I'd expect either, and went rubbery. They were fine in a juice though so not wasted, but I'll try the soaking in cold water trick next time.

happyfeet245 · 02/10/2020 14:14

I haven't had bad carrots but I have had so many rotten in the middle potatoes this year and soft tomatoes! What's wrong with 2020 veg?!

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:16

I think they got us used to second rate food in lockdown and are now flogging us the rest of the crap.

I mean you get the odd carrot that goes off in a bag but never have so many just gone crap like this

I should imagine it’s weather related to an extent. I don’t know enough about the logistics to know how long from harvest carrots are sold,

I’ve noticed for a while those pre-bagged ones turn rotten quickly so only buy loose ones now. I don’t think many fruit and veg are optimally stored in plastic bags tbh:

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:19

That was my thought so I started taking them out

Cheesecake53 · 02/10/2020 14:22

If you submerge them in water overnight they should be much firmer.

Trut · 02/10/2020 14:25

It is carrot season. I find the ones that last longest are those that haven’t been washed and still have a layer of dirt on them.

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:26

So dirty carrots are the answer..

Never mind carrots ! Where can I find a good baking potato that tastes like a potato and not just bland white stuff?

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 14:52

yes food has tasted shit fir a long time...

It's a plot. Kevin and Katie are making secret plans to lead the Great Uprising in December 1st, when the United army of Carrots will march on Downing Street and demand their rights as free citizens...
Until the Glorious Day dawns, the carrots are feigning weakness to lull is all into a false sense of security.
Be Afraid.

Lurchermom · 02/10/2020 16:16

I thought I was going mad! All my carrots the last few months have gone rotten within a few days if buying - never had it before unless I've left them ages. Apparently storing them in sand is meant to work so might try that in desperation.

Rummikub · 02/10/2020 16:18

And tomatoes
Don’t taste anything like tomatoes anymore. Unless I pay extra for organic ones.

midlifecrash · 02/10/2020 16:23

maybe they have been grown hydroponically? This gives veg a much higher water content, and so quicker to go flabby (or mushy when you cook it, grrr cauliflower)

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/10/2020 16:23

Oh yes tomatoes used to be lovely. The smell of vine tomatoes is gorgeous.

Not any more as u say...

Totally agree OP. I'm sure my dad used to keep carrots in a basin under the sink for weeks and they stayed good. Now they go bendy / mouldy in days, wherever and however I store them: in a paper bag, plastic bag, cloth bag, no bag; in the fridge, under the sink, on the windowsill. I've tried everything!
