How do you make espresso at home?

Our Nespresso coffee machine has died and I’d like a new one but I’ve weaned myself off a daily coffee and it seems like such a big machine just for one coffee every few days. Can one make espresso with a cafetière? Or is that more for a long coffee? I like to make lattes and I have a separate milk frother so really I just need to make a shot of espresso.

I have experience of this.. Use a macchinetta. Water in the very bottom, then coffee on top screw lid on & boil on the hob.

Sorry just seen @SetSail link. Didn't mean to duplicate

Thank you, I looked at those but it didn’t mention espresso so I assumed it made a whole cup full. Maybe I’m being silly but I thought that was different, ie, a longer, weaker coffee? I get confused with all the coffee terminology!

You need a pump machine for an espresso, I use a moka after mine broke down & it’s close to espresso but still not the ticket.

AntiqueCarpet · 02/10/2020 11:33

Aha, off to google pump machine! How big are they?

you could get an aeropress if you want something small. good for posh camping too! My husband uses one in the garden office and he's pretty fussy. We have a full on Gaggia machine in the kitchen but that's bigger than a Nespresso. Cafetiere coffee is not the same.

www.argos.co.uk/product/7356269 you can order this soon or theres one for £60.

I’d get a burr grinder though. Fresh ground coffee is so much better.

AntiqueCarpet · 02/10/2020 11:56

The aeropress is much more the size I’m after, does your husband drink espresso?

That pump machine looks great but it’s bigger than our current Nespresso! I’ll google burr grinder.

You can get slimline Nespresso machines. It works for me.

I find the Aeropress a real faff to use and the coffee is no better than from a stove top maker.

Just adjust the amount of water you put into your stove top maker to get a more intense short coffee.
