What does it mean when Trump says he potentially wouldn't hand over power, even if he loses the election?

This isn't about stirring, I genuinely don't understand what I'm hearing.
Isn't this a really big deal? Doesn't this statement in itself call into question his suitability to lead a democracy? Has this been said before, is this part of the usual bluster and pomp that presidents often have that I don't think we're used to in the UK?
If he did actually refuse, would other countries intervene?

I wondered that myself

What’s the point in even voting if he’s going to turn round and say “well that didn’t count really, so I’m staying in office”

Fantasisa · 02/10/2020 10:56

It means he would have to be forcibly removed from the White House.

Oooo that could be fun to see!

Straight jacket and manhandling the bastard out

LaurieFairyCake · 02/10/2020 11:00

He would use the courts to say that the election was rigged etc, invalid in many ways - he's already setting this up about postal voting

Mrsjayy · 02/10/2020 11:00

He would be "removed" from office he has no say after January (I think the next president js instilled) so 8 just imagine he would be arrested for being a fanny.

ChaChaCha2012 · 02/10/2020 11:00

He is already claiming fraud around postal ballots. Duplicate votes, votes for him discarded etc.

If he refuses to accept the result then it would go to the Supreme Court to decide. The SC is currently weighted in his favour, and likely will be even more so if his nominated candidate is put into office. Whether they will apply the rules of justice as they are intended, or seek to manipulate them to his advantage, we'll have to wait and see.

Civil war?

Rememberallball · 02/10/2020 11:02

He’s already been told that, even if he tried delaying the vote blaming Covid-19 (as he planned earlier in the summer) and then saying he would graciously stay in office until some indeterminate point in time, he can’t do this and his presidency ends on January 19th whether there has been an election or not because of how the US constitution is. This is just another ploy on his behalf to stay in office as long as he possibly can whether legitimately or not!!

StealthPolarBear · 02/10/2020 12:05

Ok it does sound like bluster and that there would be a plan to handle him. That's reassuring.

If he were charged with being a fanny would he grab himself?

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 02/10/2020 12:09

He probably grabs himself regularly Hmm

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/10/2020 12:17

What baffles me is why he wants another 4 years. He never really wanted to win in the first place, the world is laughing at him (which he hates) and he's having to do actual work for the first time in his life. It would be so, so easy for him to stand down and say, "Well, I fixed the mess every single other president has made, everything that goes wrong after this is because nobody is as awesome as me."

StealthPolarBear · 02/10/2020 12:19

Chronic megalomania

I don't think other countries would need to intervene.

Nancy Pelosi would be first in the queue to drag him out by his wig.

It's all bluster. He'd have no right to stay and no support from anyone. The military would march him out if need be.
