Rainbow blanket for baby

Everything everyone has bought for my future DS is blue!! I wanted to get him a rainbow blanket as I think they're beautiful and I think he needs colour in his life. Everyone keeps saying that it's too 'girly'. Am I wrong in thinking he's literally just a baby what is wrong with a rainbow blanket. Should I just go ahead and buy it? Grin

@SleepingStandingUp

You'll make him gay, indoctrinating him into the Rainbow crew. It's also proven that boys exposed to gender non conforming clothes, toys etc have smaller willies.
lmao 😂

Step away from Frugi

Their clothes are too nice

Dread to think what I have spent with them on DS and his forthcoming baby sister

LollipopViolet · 01/10/2020 19:19

Do it! A colleague had a baby boy a few months back, and wrapped him in a lovely rainbow blanket - i didn't think it was girly, I thought it made him look even cuter!

Yes buy it! Apparently babies can see very bright colours better particularly red
Red, black and white.

Which makes sense, because babies are tiny fascists.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/10/2020 19:51

People said my red pram was a 'boy' colour. Neither DD seemed to mind.

Thousands of girls wear blue or navy school uniforms without turning into boys.

I had lovely rainbow fleece footmuff in the pushchair. It was bright and cheery and Ioved it.

I feel slightly sad about the fact that rainbows have become the symbol of children born to parents following babyloss. I realise I have been incomparably fortunate never to experience this, and it's a trivial thing in comparison, but I feel I can't buy rainbow clothes, blankets etc. for my DC because they're not "rainbow babies". Does anyone else feel like this? I'm fully expecting to be attacked for this - I don't know how to phrase it better, or perhaps there's no.good way.

FeltCarrot · 01/10/2020 20:16

I really want to make this blanket now but I don’t know anyone about to have a baby! 😂

Frugi is dangerous, only type it in on ebay!! Also Little Green Radicals.on upside it does have a good resale price. I hate the pink/blue debate. If you're thinking of having a second different colours make a lot more sense anyway plus why limit your child. I'm not sticking to pink for my girl!!

I did wonder this too however I don't know anyone that has struggled with babies in that way. On Etsy it kept saying 'perfect for a rainbow baby' which did make me feel a little guilty.

It never occurred to me not to get rainbow things because of rainbow babies. I like rainbows so I bought things with rainbows on 🤷🏻‍♀️

Rainbows are so awesome that they have become symbols of quite a few things - rainbow babies, LGBT pride, even a symbol of hope during lockdown (when people displayed pictures of rainbows in their windows). I don't think anyone has a monopoly on rainbows.

BlueRaincoat1 · 01/10/2020 20:29

I have used this for my 2 boys. It never crossed my mind not too, it's so lovely and colourful. Don't be put off!

I dont think rainbows are girly, my little boy has always worn lots of rainbows! Not a rainbow baby either. My mum knitted him a pastel rainbow blanket (basically quite pink), strangers always thought he was a girl but I didnt really care. Just have what you like!

NameChange30 · 01/10/2020 21:00

Interestingly there are subtle differences in styling depending on whether the item with rainbows is marketed as being for boys and girls; the "boys" rainbows will have strong colours and no pink or purple, and the design might also have dinosaurs (SO MANY DINOSAURS on "boy" clothes!), whereas the "girls" rainbows might have pastel colours and will have pink and purple, plus there will probably be flowers and unicorns (unicorns are for girls apparently?!)

Annoys me but what can you do.

NameChange30 · 01/10/2020 21:00

for boys or girls

BikeRunSki · 01/10/2020 21:04

DS had a rainbow blanket as a baby, then matching duvet cover and light shade as he fit a bit bigger. He’s 12 now, still has them!

FraterculaArctica · 01/10/2020 22:35

I suppose I worry that everyone would see a DC in a rainbow blanket and think sympathetically about a presumed baby loss, when that's not the case, or that bereaved parents would feel here was someone who could share some of their experiences - I'm worried about appropriating misplaced sympathy or triggering emotions in those who have suffered a loss, by sending the wrong signal with rainbow clothing.

Nah. Rainbows have been used for some many things. They could also presume you're showing support for the NHS or the LGBT community. It's a meteorological phenomenon, it's not sex specific or linked to one particular cause.
shreddednips · 01/10/2020 22:49

My DS had a lovely sleeping bag covered in cheerful rainbows, it was my favourite! He also had some very cute pink flowery pyjamas, bought for him by my DH's grandmother because she liked the pattern. He looked so sweet in them Grin

CoodleMoodle · 01/10/2020 23:05

Both of my DC have beautiful rainbow blankets, knitted by an extended family member. She made one for DD(6) before she was born, and she still has it in bed with her at night, and needs it when she's poorly.

She/we loved it so much that we asked for another one when we found out about DS(2). He loves his as well and can't be without it. They're just different enough that we can tell them apart, and of course they can tell which is which without even looking!

Go for it OP - so much of the stuff for boys is blue and grey and brown, and a bit of colour is great!

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/10/2020 23:18

Who is everyone?
Nonsense ! Get a lovely colourful blanket for your son.

PivotPivott · 02/10/2020 00:07

Get whatever you want. Rainbow isn't girly at all.
My son has a pram. I best return it don't want him looking girly Grin
