How we put names in order

Was speaking to DH earlier and he referred to a couple we know in “the wrong order” (think should be Ant and Dec but he said Dec and Ant).

However this for me mentally scrambling about for other couples to try and work our why we put them in the order we do... and am flummoxed.

Is there a reason we say “pairs” names in a certain order?

(Sorry this is random).

I think it’s usually the person you knew first (or know better) that you say first.
So my family refer to me and DH as “Jemima & Mr Tiggywinkle”.... but his family refer to us as “Mr Tiggywinkle & Jemima”

I agree. Or, in the case of older relatives where I've known them the same amount of time, it seems to be the actual blood relative that comes first - this might be because my parents followed the "known them the longest" rule though.

They sound totally wrong the other way round!

Makes sense. It was the relatives that were throwing me off - but of course - it will be who my parents knew longest etc!

Ant and Dec is deliberate because it's their brand, they also always stand that way around on screen so you can tell them apart :)

I think it’s sometimes short name first.

My SIL has a three syllable name and even though she’s DH’s sister it’s still “Ben and Melanie” (or similar). I think it sounds awkward the other way. Might be just their names.

I know a couple with similar names and it's Melanie first (I've known her the longest)

I'm sitting here muttering names to myself.

@GreyishDays hmm see Dh has a one syllable name and wine two and we refer to ourselves as him first then me - so perhaps when there’s no “known longer” thing you do that.
