RENAULT ESPACE DEATH TRAP FOR A CAR

If you are planning to invest in a family car, please do not invest in Renault.
The cars may be pretty to look at but that's about it!
We have had a top of the range Renault which has brought nothing but insecurity and serious, hazardous problems and Renault, as a company, refuses to acknowledge their role and responsiblilty to put the saftey of it's customers ahead of their profits.

I do not any parent would joke about or take their child's safety lightly....& I am not exaggerating when I say the car is a safety hazard. My toddler managed to open the rear door whilst I was overtaking on a motorway and DESPITE the child lock being activated. As if this wasn't enough, when I tried to pull over, the hazard lights did not work.
The car was 2 weeks old.
The car has gone on to have one serious problem after another.

We do not feel safe or confident transporting our kids in this car.

Sadly Renault, who claims that customer satisfaction and safety is a priority is renaging on it's responsibility and remains uncontactable at a Group level.

You'd be better off going to the papers, OP.

  1. was it actually a brand new car or a second hand one?
  2. Did you buy it from the manufacturer directly or a car dealership?
FMSH · 01/10/2020 15:53

This was a brand new car and bought from a registered Renault dealership.

Between 2 weeks old - 3 years old the car had had in the region of 35 different incidents. The most recent was in january of this year. The car has been immobilised since as we no longer feel safe in the car.
Renault does not want to know.

I have a Megane and I love it so I don't think it's all Renaults.

LeSquigh · 01/10/2020 18:18

I reckon you may be unlucky. I had a Clio and it was great.

The one that people should be worried about is the Vauxhall Zafira. I think they have been subject to recall for fires in the past but they still do it. A LOT.

Madamfrog · 01/10/2020 18:24

You obviously got the one made last thing on a Friday 😔.
Surely it is guaranteed as you bought it new? With all that wrong with it you could suggest they exchange it so they can run all sorts of tests on it, it isn't normal.
Talk to head office rather than a retailer.
I think you are very unlucky, I have had nothing but Espaces and Grand Espaces over the last 30+ years and never had a problem.

catsteandcake · 01/10/2020 18:39

We had this about 5 years ago with a Renault espace, literally one fault after another and we ploughed so much money into it thinking surely it will be okay after each garage trip but it just continued so we ended up selling it faulty for peanuts to a mechanic, probably the worst car I've ever had!

Alwaysfrank · 01/10/2020 18:47

We bought one brand new top of range many years ago. We had several problems which we we forgave (faulty battery, failed suspension, failed speedometer) but with 30k mikes on clock/less than 5 years old it broke down in spectacular fashion on a foreign motorway. That was the final straw. It cost almost £5k to repair and we sold it a year later for 10% of what we paid for it. Worst purchase of our lives. I'm still traumatised and would never ever buy another Renault.

rosiethehen · 01/10/2020 19:25

It'll be under warranty. Tell them it's not fit for purpose and you want your money back otherwise you'll go to trading standards.

SBTLove · 01/10/2020 19:27

Renault after sales service is beyond awful, I tell anyone not to buy one, my DH has a brand new expensive one and it’s just been one thing after another and them lying and fobbing him off, dreadful company.

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 01/10/2020 19:29

Renaults (and french cars in general) are renowned for their dodgy electrics. I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole.

rosiethehen · 01/10/2020 19:30

Can you get in touch with the CEO?

Tell them to refund you otherwise you'll have no option other than to contact the papers.

rosiethehen · 01/10/2020 19:31

The UK managing director's email.

goingtotown · 01/10/2020 19:33

Demand a refund you’ll never feel safe in the car after the problems have been fixed.

Dawnlassie · 01/10/2020 19:37

Firstly a new car is a liability not an investment.

Secondly its a bit OTT to say people should avoid all Renaults. It might just be your car was a 'Friday afternoon vehicle' and slipped though the net. And this is coming from somebody who does not even like Renaults.

Dunnowhat2do · 01/10/2020 19:41

I'm on my 4th Renault. I always found them quite reliable IMO. Have you tried taking it to another branch?

Rainbowshine · 01/10/2020 20:25

You’d be better off writing to one of the consumer columns in a paper. The Guardian has one, they seem to get companies to actually sort things out when they call up and say we’ve had a reader send in a complaint about your customer service.
