Brilliant that Chris Whitby has just confirmed covid infections NOT going up in children anywhere in the country despite schools being back.

All age groups for children and all over the country. This suggests that children are not as susceptible to covid and not the mass spreaders.

That is good news. Even a glimmer is appreciated at the moment.

megletthesecond · 30/09/2020 17:21

Are they sure that school aged children are being tested or are they just being kept off sick?

Though 17 and 18 year olds go to school and their rate is rising.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 30/09/2020 17:22

It could also be that they're not being tested.
We've seem tons of people on here saying they wont test kids for a cold and a cough.

I know that's what I thought

Yes our council (Cardiff) publishes something similar; that cases in children in schools have generally been isolated, one or two children, and haven't spread further.

When you think about the zero social distancing that primary school children especially do, that's living proof that the virus doesn't spread too quickly within groups of children.

DonLewis · 30/09/2020 17:24

Testament to the hard work of teachers and schools.

The government should be ashamed that they haven't funded schools to implement the measures that appear to be working. Can't believe that wasn't one of the questions tbh.

bigbumbiggerheart · 30/09/2020 17:24

The children that have been sent home with colds locally to be on the safe side had negative tests.
Great news and hopefully schools will be the very last to close even when other things are shut

Yep good news. Hopefully England will change their mind on children being counted in the rule of 6 soon 🤞🏻

bigbumbiggerheart · 30/09/2020 17:26

I agree probably shows children aren't the mass spreaders originally thought since they have not been able to socially distance at all and yet no mass outbreaks

I think the problem with children not being included in the rule of 6 is that it means more adults could meet

Good to hear

Although Scotland is only two households iirc. Probably have to keep numbers down somehow.
ChaChaCha2012 · 30/09/2020 17:34

That means that an even greater proportion of adults are testing positive.

Good news for children, not good news at all for adults.

Letseatgrandma · 30/09/2020 17:48

I’m not sure all the cases of adults in schools testing positive will be greatly reassured by that, though.

x2boys · 30/09/2020 18:14

All the schools near me have had cases( Bolton) and my son has already had to self isolate for two weeks

Yes, 5 cases already in my DS(17) 6th form and they've only been back just over 2 weeks.

Also, at least 4 other schools in this borough off the top of my head. All bar one are senior schools though.

Chris Whitty graphs on BBC news tonight indicated that all over the country - even in the Covid hotspots that the rates for children were not increasing.

So although schools near you, the overall rate of infection for children even in hotspot areas is not increasing according to the statistics he showed. Naturally there will be some cases. Your son having to self isolate due to an adult in the school or is your son positive? Many isolating due to cases near them but it may be adults of course.

We still haven't seen one single case in a child in our 4 secondary schools - one year group sent home since a parent had covid but his child didn't - just to be on the safe side. None in the primaries.

OP posts:
bigbumbiggerheart · 30/09/2020 18:28

I would suggest that 18 year olds are adults though.

Perhaps more at home/online teaching for 17 and 18 year olds if infection rate increases but the younger children (especially primary) to continue with school?

OP posts:
x2boys · 30/09/2020 18:44

He had been in contact with someone in his bubble that was positive, they have had cases throughout the school and most local schools ,one school only had year 4 in ,my son's in year nine .

AutumnleavesturntoGold · 30/09/2020 18:52

Without proper testing and cases just kicking off how can they be sure?

TeeBee · 30/09/2020 18:59

It would be great news if he hadn't have show a graph a few weeks ago showing that COVID was increasing in all age groups.

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 30/09/2020 19:02

This suggests that children are not as susceptible to covid and not the mass spreaders.

Is there any evidence to suggest that children are not spreading the virus to adults?
