Urethral bulking

Hi, this is my first post on mumsnet Smile.

I've been searching for chat about urethral bulking injections as I've been offered one next week, but can't find any reference to it on here.
I have been diagnosed with vaginal prolapse as well as an over active bladder (I hadn't even known that existed! No wonder I need to wee more than everybody else!)
I would like to hear from anybody who has had this done... did it work? If so how long did it last? Any side effects?
I've been trying to find out what is used and from what I can work out it appears to be something that was once used in breast implants but isn't any more due to safety concerns... which also concerns me!
No amount of pelvic floor exercises help (and believe me I really try!) Nor do pessaries.
Any further info on the urethra bulking injections would be much appreciated.

Hi @spacefruit, have just come across this thread. I’m having this in January. How did you find it? Hope it worked for you.

spacefruit · 16/12/2021 09:14

@thewallisblue hi there,
I did have it done, I think it was back in March. It has definitely helped !
I've found that for the weeks after my period and before ovulation I've had the most improvement; after ovulation and before my period I still find not so much improvement but still better than previously.
It wasn't a pleasant procedure but I'm really glad to have had it done. I think it may wear off after a few years but I was told I could go and have it done again after 5 years or so.
I was very lucky that the consultant who did mine had higher than average success rates ☺
Good luck if you go ahead, it's a daunting thought but it definitely has helped me.

Thanks so much, that’s really promising. Tbh my incontinence is so bad I’ll take any sort of improvement at all, so fingers crossed I have as much success as you have!

I’m also looking into this procedure for severe stress incontinence after my first baby last year.

@spacefruit it’s great that you’ve had some success! Are you able to do anything that you weren’t able to do before e.g. running?

@thewallisblue sorry to hear you have similar issues to me, it’s life changing and not in a good way! How did your appointment go in January? Have you had any improvement?

Spookyroo, ha ha no running is still out of the question for the second half of the month, though I can do a bit of jumping around and light not serious running (as in, we're late for school) pre ovulation. Overall it's helped so definitely worth doing. I didn't mention that I've also found out that I also have an overactive bladder which doesn't help With the leaks! thewallisblue, Have you had any improvement?

@spacefruit haha same here. I can do a little jog to the car if it's raining and maybe some squat jumps during a workout but a full blown run is a no go! I'm hoping for some improvement when I have finished breastfeeding.
