Irresponsible cat ownership

Why oh why do people let their cats out un-neutered? There is a house down the street that has about 5 cats and at least 2 of the toms still have their balls. 1 of them picks on all the other cats in the street (mine included) and this would, if not stop it, at least reduce his need to fight. I have a female kitten (rescued as an unwanted kitten from an accidental litter). I would never even dream of letting her out without spaying her first. If she did accidentally get out she'd probably get pregnant in about 5 minutes with all the intact males!

Just a rant really. I don't think there is an answer because there will always be idiot pet owners.

No one agree!

I know what you mean, op. I think it just comes down to general lack of care for pets. I know someone who has never taken their cat to the vet.

I know what you mean ive just helped my friend rehome her neighbours cats the female was pregnant constantly her last two litters died probably due to defects because its her son and grandson getting her bloody pregnant her and her son were shipped off to a nice sanctuary by a lovely lady who couldn't hide her disgust at the uneutered toms she left numbers ive sent info to people to get the toms neutered no one will do it because its "unnatural" depriving a cat of his right to roam and his bollocks...sod that ive three boys all fucking neutered

Totally irresponsible. No one who does this has any right to call themselves a cat lover. Actually they're not even responsible cat owners Hmm

It drives me up the wall. The copious amounts of fb posts on the local selling pages for kittens for a tenner. It breaks my heart. I know dogs are used like this as well but it seems cats are just so neglected as they can 'look after themselves'

It infuriates me. For us part of having cats is that they are neutered. All of ours were rescued so neutered when we got them. We currentlyhave 2, a boy and a girl and they are so contented. We have an un neutered tom in our neighbourhood that was constantly trying it on with our girl. She fought him, our boy fought him and finally he stopped. But to go after a neutered girl he must be tormented with his hormones. It's a rough life for both if they are not neutered and that's before you think of all the kittens.

vanillandhoney · 30/09/2020 16:17

It's so selfish.

There's absolutely no reason not to neuter a male either. With dogs, there can be benefits to leaving them "entire" but with cats it's just all negatives.

Lazy, shitty owners who can't be bothered to provide even the most basic care for their pets.

I’ve seen ridiculous ideas still being spread like it’s cruel not to let a cat experience birth and raising kittens. Lots of I wouldn’t want my balls cut off/hysterectomy so why would my cat...

Almost as if cats are capable of family planning and only go out and get pregnant/impregnate of they want kittens.

People are really thick. They also need to stop with the anthropomorphism and putting human values on cats.

LST · 30/09/2020 16:32

@bluebluezoo wow! I must say that give a while new meaning to batshit crazy! I don't think a young female has much choice sometimes. So it isnt something I would choose !

I agree with you. I think with males as the owners won't end up with the kittens they don't see it as a problem even though their cat is more likely to be run over or lost as he will wander further in search of a female. Or that he's more at risk of FIV.
There's a couple of owned unneutered ones (that I know of) near us. One comes to visit our neutered male and he never ever attacks him, I wonder if he's realised he's not a threat. It's also weird as ours will start a fight with most cats but not this one. This particular cat is bloody loud though, he just wanders about meowing or lies on the back wall meowing. The other ours will fight with. I know where he lives and took a CP leaflet about neutering and how they could get help with the costs etc (I'm a volunteer so less random than it sounds) but a year and a half on still has his balls.
The amount of stray adult cats is very sad and a result of this too. So many come into care and clearly have had a home at some point but owner gets bored/moves/cat is too old etc they get abandoned. Of course these owners never microchip either.

@vinorosso74 it is so heartbreaking. The big grey un-neutered boy that terrorises my big ginger boy yowels outside sometimes. It must be so stressful for them to have so much testosterone running through them. He obviously feels like he needs to defend his territory from my boys (my little black cat wouldn't hurt a fly so he is quite happy to keep out of trouble) but my ginger quite likes his garden so does come in with a torn ear and nose scratches on occasion.

Totally agree. We recently took in a stray Tom cat who'd been hanging around for about 6 months.

He had a chip but the phone number they had was disconnected and letters went unanswered so they let us put our details on there.

First thing I did was get him booked in for getting neutered . Poor thing kept turning up with scratches on his face Sad and god knows how many little mini me's he has running around the place.

I just don't understand why you'd get a cat chipped but not neutered Confused
