Husband is yellow and in hospital and I'm scared

Name changed as lots of people know. Just looking for a handhold and any personal experience.

Husband has had a 'tender' tummy for a couple of months. He's also had 3 vomiting episodes in the last 5 months, but we thought they were food poisoning the first 2 times. Then at the end of the week he turned yellow, including his eyes and peeing very dark. Took him to the GP on Friday who sent him to hospital.

He's had blood tests but no scan and not seen a gastro specialist yet because they don't work weekends. GP thought gallbladder (possibly caused as he lost a lot of weight last year and gained most back) but the ward doctor thinks it's a problem with his liver not gallbladder because of his bloods. One (can't remember what) is meant to be under 50 and it's in the 900s (up from 800s when he was admitted). One is meant to be below 130 and it's 230. Bilirubin is 85, not sure what it's meant to be. He hasn't vomited since Monday night and is eating a bit and pooing (pale, chalky). Sorry for all the medical details I just thought someone might ask. He's 50 and his BMI is over 50.

The main thing really is that I'm just petrified. I can't visit due to Covid and equally can't have family or friends come round to hug me and I just feel so alone. He's my best friend and I am so scared. We have two youngish children. I'm scared they won't be able to diagnose properly because of his size and I'm beyond frightened that it's something like pancreatic cancer and that we're going to lose him. I'm trying to hold myself together for the kids but can't stop crying when I'm alone in the evening. Taking him in on Friday and then having no diagnosis all weekend has been so awful.

I reckon gall bladder. I got a gallstone stuck in my bile duct once and it sent me yellow. It passed through on its own eventually and I went back to normal - there was no stone evident on X-ray but they could see my bile duct was stretched open when I had an ercp. I had my gb taken out a few months later and never been better. I hope your husband feels better soon.

Sorry to hear OP.
There is another thread on MN which has virtually the same title and description as yours. You might want to get in contact as may be going through similar issues. All the best for your OH and family x

OP, I hope by now you've had more news and you and your DH know a bit more about what's causing these symptoms. I had the same symptoms last year and it turned out to be a gall bladder problem. Everything seemed to work very slowly in hospital, one day some blood tests, next day an ultrasound, day after that an MRI etc. so it felt like a long time before they were able to decide a treatment plan. In reality, of course, it wasn't a long time, and they were being very thorough.

It must be really difficult not being able to go and visit your DH to see for yourself how he is. I experienced it from the other side earlier this year when I was back in hospital with no visitors allowed. My DH did come and drop off things for me at reception and it made my day if I got a package of goodies from him.

Can I just add to my last post - the stuff they can check your blood for now is amazing, all kinds of reagents and enzyme levels etc which give the doctors a big insight into what's going on inside to add to what they see on scans etc. I was a biochemist a long time ago and I was in awe at what they can tell about your health these days from blood analysis. I think that they will get a very good idea of what's wrong with your DH regardless of his weight etc.

How is he? @Busybrain2020

Looks like @TheMostHappy and others may be right! They’re thinking it’s a bile duct obstruction as he has multiple gall stones and an enlarged bile duct. They couldn’t see the blockage though so he has to have an MRI but there’s a queue so that may not be till Friday and then we will hit the weekend lull again before any procedure can be done. But as long as he’s ok I don’t mind waiting. It’s been so scary and we are not out of the woods yet but I’m feeling calmer. Thanks for listening to me.

Holding your hand OP, three months ago my partner turned and we had one hell of a job getting him diagnosed, he was even turned away from A&E despite the whites of his eyes being dayglo orange. Here's hoping for a good outcome for you and him Flowers

Busybrain2020 · 29/09/2020 22:55

Thank you - it’s been such a shock as he’s never ill. I hope your partner is doing ok. Thank you for replying. Flowers
