Rule of six

From reading about the Rules - can six people socialise downstairs in a house, if the other occupants of the house (husband and 2 kids) are upstairs and don’t come down? The six people aren’t mixing with anyone and Pritti Patel was talking about 6 mingling...

I can’t find an answer...

Well it's talking about 'meeting groups of 6'. So if people aren't meeting then I guess it's ok but they really would strictly not have to meet. But when you're talking of children, and mum is downstairs, the probability is very high that one or both would come downstairs looking for you at some point. I've been wondering about this as we have a separate building that we usually entertain in, and if there were some in the house and some in the annex people would be further apart than the average neighbours in terraced houses for example. So I'm following with interest!

My husband would keep the kids upstairs - they would be asleep before the guests arrived. So shouldn’t come down...

I suspect being in a different room would still count. I'm not sure I'd want to risk a fine.

It’s great how clear the rules are really.

No it’s 6 people in a house including the garden.

RepeatSwan · 24/09/2020 19:54

No, I don't think so. Or everyone would just have house parties of 30 people and when the police knocked put six in each room Grin.

It's six. That's all, just six. Not six, with another three upstairs.

I arent sure how that isnt ok, but multiple groups of 6 in the same room in a pub/restaurant is OK 🤔

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/09/2020 19:54

All in the same house so no it wouldn’t be allowed

RepeatSwan · 24/09/2020 19:54

Also I think that particular rule is clear.

You do know why really! Because people would lie and pretend they were going to be six in the living room and four upstairs, but then be ten once the door shut.

The whole point was it would be easy to police.

When meeting friends and family you do not live with (or have formed a support bubble with) you must not meet in a group of more than 6, indoors or outdoors. This is against the law
Well the specific words say you must not meet in a group of, but I guess if the police knock the door and there's you and give friends downstairs and DH upstairs with all the kids, how do you prove that at least DH hasn't been with you.
