To think the kids are more fucked now than during lockdown re: school?

My 5yo got a cough, due to the testing system being unfit for purpose, her test was void.

So her and 7yo are off for the isolation period. 10 days they will miss. After only being back for 8 days.

No work has been set, nothing has been sent home, no-one can tell me how kids will catch up (y1 and y3). Not to mention the social aspect... the kids are getting back into the swing of school, re-establishing relationships, getting to know their new teachers and mine are not.

My kids are two weeks behind the rest.

I expect regular coughs and temperatures. How far will they fall behind?

They probably won't fall behind, because over the next couple of terms most of the rest of the class will miss stuff too.

Anyway, they have until y11 to catch up.

It's a crap situation but my understanding is that schools have to provide tasks for kids that are self isolating now? So can you go back to the school and check?

For instance, our school has released a detailed plan about what they will provide if a single child, group, or entire class / school has to self isolate.

Have you asked the school for anything? Ds in year 4 was off for 4 days waiting a test, I emailed the teacher asking if she had anything he could do as he was well in himself, just a bad cough. She kindly emailed the Maths and English work each day for him whilst he was off.

Definitely ask the school what resources they are providing. DC bring home a folder on their bags every night with "home learning" tasks. The teachers add another activity to the folder every few days so children who are off have some work to access and they also publish tasks on the school website

Surely 10 days off is no big deal. If one of them is ill, the other will likely be ill soon. Let them be ill and do a bit of work. It's not hard to figure out what needs doing (the hard part is having time off work to do it).

Fwiw, mine had no work set by the school at all over lockdown. There were some optional activities, like go take a nature walk and do some art project. It's hard to go on a nature walk and do art when you're stuck in side all day listening to your mum have back to back meetings on Zoom. Now at least, the school does have a plan. If they have to self-isolate, they'll be sent daily maths and english lessons and then some further things to do in the afternoon that are optional. If the whole class is off, it's 2 hours a day on Zoom in the mornings. Bit of a pain and I have no idea what people who don't have multiple laptops will do, but it's fine.

But 10 days off is fine, it's a full week of school and a few extra days. They won't fall behind.

You can’t expect the school to provide you with work, if they do they are being very kind and you should be especially grateful, but they should tell you what they are covering so you can do your own research and work with your kids. Many schools tell parents what children are covering each term via their website or newsletters anyway, so it might be worth checking those first.
