Is this a new scam?

I got an email today supposedly from HM courts & tribunals service, a fixed penalty notice for an unpaid toll while driving. Except I don’t drive or own a car! So it can’t be legit. It had a click here to pay thing which I obviously haven’t done (it asks for £10). Anyone else had this? I’ve reported it as a potential scam anyway.

It certainly sounds like a scam.

Even if you did have a car, a fixed penalty notice like that would be sent in the post. Not an email.

How would they have your email anyway?. If you were a car owner they would get your address as registered owner and write to you.
Anything to do with cars should have the car registration mentioned also, which you don’t have anyway.

It's a scam, it's been reported in our local paper.

Sounds like it.

Here's another one which my elderly mother had yesterday - BT phoned her about a problem with her internet which was affecting "everybody in her sheltered housing", they wanted her to go to a web link and click on it to install some software which would fix the problem for it Angry

Ffsnosexallowed · 24/09/2020 08:25

Its a scam. How on earth do you think they would have gotten your email?????

custardbear · 24/09/2020 08:25

It'll be a scam. I had an automated phone call yesterday stating I had been accused of tax fraud, input the phone down. Just delete it, or report to HMRC - I checked on line and there are scans going around

I just hate seeing things like that because I know that some poor suckers are going to pay. My mum once fell for the “there’s a virus on your pc” and paid £100. She only told me afterwards and I told her to call me if she ever gets anything asking for money again. That’s why I reported it immediately. But sounds like it’s a well known one anyway.

For what it’s worth, I’m behind on my council tax and due to me giving my email address when I arranged a bulky waste collection, they are now constantly emailing me. It is definitely legit because every detail is correct and the email address is the council. So organisations will ask for money via email if they can. So it’s not as straight forward as nobody asks for money via email. Of course there’s no link on the legit council email to pay, I’ve been told to contact them etc. But if someone less aware of these things is emailed a legit email like mine, then also a scam, it does make them more likely to fall for it.

Me too, also lots lately to say my internet is going to be cut off.

It is definitely a scam.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 24/09/2020 08:51

I get daily messages that my PayPal has been suspended.

It's really pissing me off and I don't know how to stop them.

AlternativePerspective · 24/09/2020 08:57

That tax fraud one is horrible but it also made me laugh because it’s this ominous automated voice which states that this charge is going to be made against you and then says “if you do not press 1 the charge will continue and, you will get arrested shortly.” Grin
