Hyperemesis Gravidarum - HG - cyclizine

Hi everyone,

First time posting 😄

I’m 14 weeks pregnant -yippee! I have been suffering with morning sickness since week 6. It’s just been diagnosed today as HG and I’ve been prescribed cyclizine. I’m currently lay in bed feeling so drowsy (with a very dry mouth!) but sick still 🤢 can anyone tell me how long it takes for these to kick in? Did they work for you ?

Abit of history I’ve had 2 miscarriages previous to this pregnancy one at 9 weeks last June and one at 6.5 weeks in January this year, as you can imagine It’s an anxious time as I just want everything to be ok

I didn’t want to take anything during pregnancy.. but who does ! Yesterday I was sick 8 times just while I was at work, running up and down 2 flights of stairs to the loo. I currently can’t drive as even that makes me sick - throwing up in an Avon bag Parked outside school was not my finest Moment 😂

I can empathise OP as I too have HG.

Cyclizine did very little for me but worth trying in case it works for you.

I am pretty much bed bound. I hope you find something that works for you.

Thank you @funkypolar how far along are you? What have you been prescribed ?

I’ve had three HG pregnancies.

First one 18 years ago, was basically told to get on with it - lost 6 stone in weight and was so ill.

Second pregnancy 6 years ago I was taken a lot more seriously, was on cyclizine from 6 weeks and it worked wonders.

Last pregnancy earlier this year cyclizine made me
Worse! I ended up on Ondansetron which was a wonder drug for me. Sickness went immediately but I had to take the tablets religiously, an hour late and I’d be sick again.

There are so many drugs to try and they are safe. Please don’t suffer.

You may have to give a few a try before you find one that works. Don’t be fobbed off by drs or midwives.

I too have HG and am in bed most of the day. There is a support thread on here which is good too, I will link it :)

It is the most horrendous thing, I try to have ice lollies, flat fizzy juice (coke or lemon fanta is my go to) and tinned mandarins.

The only food I have managed is the odd slice of toast, a baked potato at the weekend while I was having a (my only)---- good day and it was heaven to be able to eat an actual meal.

The anti sickness tablets make me feel horrible, drowsy, dry mouth, fuzzy head, headaches so I don't feel it is worth taking them for me, this is just my opinion - I know they are a godsend for others.

Hope you find something to help you through it, get as much rest as you can 😊💐

My pregnancies were yonks ago but I couldn't take cyclizine at all. It made me so ill I couldn't walk. If you think it's not working ask for something else. I second Ondansetron - was amazing!!

I had 2 HG pregnancies - I suffered through the first without medication but the second was worse (probably due to having a toddler to look after). I had cyclizine and I found it took the edge off but also made me drowsy - thank God my family were really supportive and helped me with dc 1.

Camomila · 23/09/2020 16:10

I took cyclzine everyday for 5 or 6m, DS2 is absolutely fine :)

I tried ondadestrin too but it gave me headaches/stomach aches so I stuck with the cyclizine (and was drowsy instead)

Oh i empathise OP. I had HG with my 2nd pregnancy from start to finish unfortunately. After many admissions for IV fluids in the early days i was given ondansetron to take alongside the cyclizine and although it didn't help completely and i did still need further admissions although much less than at the beginning it seemed to work a lot of the time and it really did help with the nausea feeling as well.
I used to freeze lucozade and full fat coke in ice cube trays so that i could just have a little bit whenever i was really struggling to keep anything down at all and sometimes it would take the edge off. it seems to be a vicious cycle once you get to the dehydrated stage so trying to suck ice cubes to avoid it getting to that level was the best i could try to do !
Despite how ill i was, in the end the constant dehydration affected my own kidneys and how much medication i was taking for sickness and the kidneys, i can assure you that the baby got every bit of goodness from my body and was born almost 5 weeks early healthy and weighing in at a healthy 6 and a half pounds as well !

I’m on prochlorperazine now but they aren’t a miracle cure. Still vomiting 4 times a day but it used to be 10 times a day.
