Burgled last night- debit card

Hey, so my student house was broken into last night, the thief took my laptop and cash that was in my room and purse, but left my debit card behind (still in the purse). Is there any way he could still be using my card details, even though he left the card behind? Card is frozen as a precaution anyway (temporary freeze on the mobile banking app) but I need to know if it’s safe to unfreeze it again? Thanks x

Yes - if he had the card details and your address then he could use it for online purchases.

Ask the bank for a new card.

lughnasadh · 23/09/2020 11:21

Did you save payment details on any sites on the laptop?

Withthemonsters · 23/09/2020 11:31

No I didn’t save my card details anywhere. Probably best to get a new card anyway for peace of mind

If you've ever shopped online on your laptop it is possible to retrieve card details. I'd get a new card just in case.

So sorry this happened to you x

Thanks all, just ordered a new card x

How awful, hope you’re okay. If you have internet banking it might be worth just double checking no money has been taken out of your account as well.

cctvrec · 23/09/2020 13:28

Sorry to hear that. I hope the bastard's dicks rot off painfully. I hate thieving shits.

I agree with the rest. New card and look out for fraudulent transactions.

Have you tried this?

chatwoo · 23/09/2020 13:32

Yes, anyone with a photo of the back and front of the card can use it online.

Just report it as lost or stolen, and get a new one sent out.

DGRossetti · 23/09/2020 14:13

A good tip is to obliterate (hot iron may be needed) the CV2 on the signature strip of any new card. It means anyone taking the card details can't use it online.

(I hope it doesn't need saying you remember the number first ...)

Withthemonsters · 23/09/2020 15:09

No money taken thank god, and card is frozen now so can’t take anything else. Ordered a new card this morning.
@cctvrec thanks for the link, unfortunately I’ve got a chromebook so it’s a different system and I didn’t set up the find my device thing- lesson learned
@DGRossetti, thanks for the tip, I’ll try that with my new card x

This may not be relevent OP but if he took anyone's phone and they've got tracking set up on it get them to run it online.

We were burgled a while ago but he failed to turn DD's phone off which meant that it was narrowed down to half a dozen possible houses. Police knew an habitual burglar lived at one of those addresses so they knocked on the door.

He had some trouble explaining why he had DD's debit card in his pocket let along the stash of other peoples phones and cards they apparently found under his bed!! Grin
