Anyone travelling to Canary Islands in the next month? Insurance?

Dowser · 23/09/2020 10:14

Just that really.
What are you doing about insurance .
It looks like most firms won’t cover you for anything Spain and islands related also no covid cover.

Not go? You won't get insurance because the foreign office is telling people not to go

LooseMooseHoose · 23/09/2020 10:26

I thought most insurance wouldn't cover a cancellation unless you had the insurance before booking the holiday anyway. Covid or no Covid.

And if you're going against FO advice then no insurance will cover you, despite what their headline policy points say. They pretty much all have that caveat in the small print.

What do you want the insurance to cover against?

BluFox · 23/09/2020 10:53

We aren’t going to the canaries but the Balearics. The EHIC will give you some health cover, we were going to look into that. I think we’re going to go despite the travel warning

It is all but essential travel to the canaries op. So you won't be insured, and EHIC is very very basic, and your treatment in the public hospital will be basic. You will need to fund some of your care, your extended stay and flights home. Canaries like the rest of Spain are seeing a spike in new infections. Check with the hotel and airlines that it is still open/flight is operating.

There are no circumstances at the moment that I would travel overseas. Things are going to get very difficult in the coming weeks and months, and quite frankly not being insured, getting stranded, having covid whilst there and/or dealing with immediate lockdowns makes it too risky for most people!

LoveNote · 23/09/2020 11:02

Why are people still insisting on ‘holidays’?

Even if you manage to get there they must be pretty basic and a big crap with restrictions everywhere.....and inflated prices to cover for covid

And then you risk bringing it back to everyone else!

Starisnotanumber · 23/09/2020 11:05

Battleface will cover for against foreign office advice.
Tenerife has a policy from their government tat they will cover covid if you get symptoms while on holiday in registered tourist accommodation so not private rents unless they have a tourist certificate
Plus add on from Staysure and Avanti will cover covid

emptyshelvesagain · 23/09/2020 11:06

Why are people still insisting on ‘holidays’?

OP didn't say it was a holiday?

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2020 11:08

LoveNote · 23/09/2020 11:08

Hence ‘holiday’ as opposed to holiday

Work related travel overseas? Doubt it

Starisnotanumber · 23/09/2020 11:11

I live in a high covid area already so the rates over there are lower than at home.
More chance of getting it in pub over here or on public transport than over there.
Mental health is important too been working all the way through this need a break.
Sitting in house will definitely not cover it.

DaisyDreaming · 23/09/2020 11:13

Some people use BattleFace insurance but it’s pathetic and only covers £15-£100 a day of hospital fees and only for certain admissions. You only have to step foot in a hospital (assuming you can walk) and the bill is over that

BluFox · 23/09/2020 12:06

The rate of infection is much, much lower where we are going and we will be limiting our contact with people before we go so as to not take it there. We aren’t high risk, so even if we did contract it we are very unlikely to need hospital care, we’d just have to pay for extra hotel accommodation to quarantine (some countries will pay this on your behalf). People need to stop being so UK centric, some countries have better health care and have successfully dealt with the pandemic.

Dowser · 23/09/2020 12:06

Thanks everyone
We’ve managed to get 15 months Cover with staysure for £388 For the two of and that’s including all the info about Dh’s mini stroke over 4 years ago. Lovely chap on phone went into everything with us.
Battleface wouldn’t do annual, was £210 for this one trip.
So appreciate all your help.
Oh yes and it is a holiday. Not going to lie.
Friend went on Saturday as she would’ve lost her money as the airline hadn’t cancelled.
Said it’s very quiet but weather is lovely.

@blufox
We were in Tenerife in March when it went into lockdown
Conditions there were far more scary then than now.
Over 3000 Rammed in the airport, no sd, no sanitizer, no face masks
My friend on the ground over there ( also evacuated in similar conditions) said everything was fine and staff at airport couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful.

Can’t wait.

We are going November if at all possible, had it booked since January so prior to this pandemic
Just to switch off and sit in the sun will do us.
Glad you are sorted with insurance, just think with 15 months it runs until nearly 2022, hope you get lots of use out of it.

notimagain · 23/09/2020 12:21

The sniping and misinformation gets tiresome..

Frankly as long as people can get insurance as required (seems they can) and follow quarantine regulations at either end of their journey (many do) it none of our or anybodies business whether they are on holiday or on business..

Enjoy your holiday Dowser

Dowser · 23/09/2020 12:44

@Starisnotanumber
@notimagain and other measured responses
Thank you so much for your kindness and support

Having had so many fun things cancelled this year, this is honestly the first spring I’ve had in my step since we were evacuated from there in March
( and we haven’t got our flights yet 🙏)
We can’t live our lives with all the joy sucked out of it.

The canaries were already suffering before this, with so many bars and businesses closed, it will have hit the people working in the hospitality industry like a ton of bricks

Anyone familiar with las americas/los cris
There’s only 2 bars open from las vistas beach to the tunnel, everything else all closed.
Even nic and Charlene the ticket sellers aren’t there any more.
We are doing our bit to support them..and keeping it going till everyone else feels it’s safe to go back👍

And you want to go again????

Given your horrendous experience last time, I am amazed you would be contemplating doing this again during the second wave! Why didn't you go when the numbers were very low if you were so keen to travel.

I wonder if you are serious or not. This forum never ceases to amaze me. Jesus wept.

This is why we will NEVER ever be able to follow the Swedish model. This is the perfect example of why we need a nanny state!

Starisnotanumber · 23/09/2020 12:55

Thanks I'm another PDLA regular. I believe that up towards The Patch there are a number of the regular bars open plus a couple of decent restaurants dedos and sugar and spice.
All the golden Mile and la paz strip is closed though. So sad that so many people have lost their jobs and hope things get back to normal soon

Dowser · 23/09/2020 13:33

@Friendsoftheearth
I honestly don’t give a flying fuck what you think. I’ll Stay out of your life and you do the same with mine.
You enjoy your nanny state love.

@Starisnotanumber
Now shame on me, in the 25 times I’ve visited Tenerife in the last 8 years, I have no idea of the the area called the patch, the golden mile and la paz
We tend not to spend much time around San Eugenio , or adeje
We stay in an apartment near the vulcano.
My Swedish friend who lives there says there’s quite a few restaurants open in the el camison area.
That’s where the big mercadona is , so we will be fine for our fresh fish dinners

We usually go in October and December.
Although I’ll be more than happy to get there in October, naturally I’ll be even happier to make it out there in December as well
Then I’ll be counting off the days till our next trip of the winter in March.

Such class!

Starisnotanumber · 23/09/2020 14:17

We are going November January March as well.
If you are staying near Vulcano then The Golden Mile is the posh shops near the dancing fountain and Hardrock. All shut.
The Patch is the area just up hill past the Hotel Siesta on other side of road. Open there at the moment is Princess Di Kevs Chill Out. Maybe more not sure. On same side as Siesta just past the tourist information is Dedos a nice American type burger and fajita type place a cut above the 3 courses for a tenner. Still reasonable prices and sugar and spice next door Italian and steak place.
Opposite is supermarket dialprix which is open.
Hope this helps

Dowser · 23/09/2020 14:32

@Starisnotanumber
Aww thanks for that. I doing even know these areas had names.
We stayed at the siesta several times . In fact it’s where we stayed with all my family for our wedding g on the beach just 5 years ago.
Was brilliant. Peter from the Dubliner played us down to the beach to the left of macdonalds and then back up to la Malvasia for the evening’s festivities.

I really miss that place and the lovely staff, Elizabethan, Jessica and Juan. Juan took my husband to get my wedding bouquet in the day of the wedding when we didn’t realise the florist closed early
I shall make a note of those restaurants and give them a try if open.
Fingers crossed hun himba in la pasarella is open and el cine, the fish restaurant in los cris is open 🙏🤞
